A tedious amount of gratuitous violence.
29 June 2016
This was better in some ways than the first books. The series tended to improve as it went on, which is not surprising, as the writer was very young when he wrote the first ones. There was a huge amount of violence, due no doubt to the youth of the writer. Teenage boys love that sort of thing. it didn't feel quite so much like a video game as the earlier ones. There was a bit more character development. But some of his influences were very obvious. I found myself thinking 'Ah, McCaffrey', 'Ah, Tolkien', etc, rather a lot. I must admit I only persevered with the series because a grandchild had recommended it, and I wanted to see what they liked. I was glad when I'd finished it.
