The series started so well. Gripping, believable. This book was nonsense from the start. Going over old ground again & again. Bringing people back from the dead too many times. Think it was more like a poor love story gone wrong.
Felt compelled to carry on reading into the early hours as the action is fast paced. The story centres around two female protagonists in a fragmented circle of gangland intrigue who have already tried to bump each other off in some terrible fashion and think the other is dead. They soon learn the truth and set about redressing the balance, dragging their respective families into the skirmish. We see on the surface two very violent and determined females who are used to being obeyed but as their stories unfold we realise they are who they are, one, because of an abused childhood and the other a strange marriage of suspicion.
More a gangster comedy than a serious attempt at a hard vicious bloodthirsty gangster story in the Martina Cole style. The better for the lack of perfunctory abusive language and more a cosier romance sort of book. It still keeps the reader guessing and wanting more.
When I am reading this book I feel I can 'see' what's going on; so much so I am almost watching a TV programme, and I'm annoyed with myself when I have to put the book down to go out or go to sleep. I'm even reading when I wake up too early to get up - like 5.30am! It has me hooked...
Jessie Keane is a very clever author. Her characters are bigger than you'd expect and very true to life. I'll definitely find more of her books to read.
Loved it, I have read all of the Annie Carter novels and loved the twists and turns of all the characters. If you like Martina Cole - you will love Jessie Keane. She might just steal her crown. I don't want to say too much about the book as it would spoil the continuing story of Annie Carter. Hope there will be another soon.
