The Nightingale is about Vianne and Isobelle. 2 Sisters and their struggles during The Second World War.
This book was beautifully written and very easy to understand. It is a very long book and I found myself bored and slowly losing interest in the first 30% of the book but I'm so glad I pushed through it and kept reading because once I got half way through I couldn't put the book down.
Very nicely written yet so heartbreaking. Don't read this book without a box of tissues. I don't often cry during books but the Nightingale had me in tears. I knew very little about the second world war while reading this book but I'm so glad I decided to read it anyway because now I feel like I have a better understanding of the impact that families dealt with during this traumatic time.
I could not put this book down. It was absolutely mind blowing. This story about 2 sisters in France during World War 11. These sisters were not very close and very different in personality but their efforts during this horrific war period were absolutely amazing. There were also other characters intertwined throughout the story. How these people suffered during this period was utterly deplorable. The tears sometimes blotted my eyes as I was reading. Kristen Hannah has to be highly commended for writing this book and also the research that she has gathered. A gut wrenching story!
I read this book as part of my book club. I loved it. I've even cast the movie for it in my head (I believe it is being turned into a movie next year). A wonderful story about family, love and strength through the most gruelling of times. It isn't the shortest or quickest book I've read, and it is not a light read, but very well worth it and a beautifully constructed book.
Each time I read some of this book and put it down I couldn’t wait to get back to it. It kept my interest from the very beginning and I was disappointed when I had read the last page. It would be hard to find a book as good on the subject of the the Second World War with all its atrocities intertwined with love, relationships, sadness and hope. I loved it and would highly recommend. I will definitely be reading more of Kristin Hannah’s books. She is a great author.
I was a bit unsure about reading another WW2 historical fiction novel but decided to give it a go due to the reviews it had received. I’m glad I did because the story captivated me. From feeling the frustration with Isabelle and her impetuousness and the helplessness with Vianne’s situation I was transfixed. This story gives and accurate depiction of the lives of women during wartime.
What a brilliant book. The First half us a little slow & at one time I almost out it aside as I just couldn't get into it. I'm so glad that I didn't as I now understand why this book was on the best sellers list for a year.
Well developed historical novel. The rural setting was interesting and added a further dimension to the WWII story. I was a little diffident when I started reading it - thought it might be too much of a romance novel for my liking but I found I was soon completely captivated by the characters and story. Would recommend it to all who like a touch of romance with great character development and accurate portrayal of an historic period in European history.
It is difficult to read stories of a war we knew nothing about, to try to really understand what it may have been like. Before now I have read and wept but not understood. Now I feel I have a glimmer of knowledge and it leaves me speechless. The characters will stay with me for a long time. A wonderful read, a beautiful and terrible story. I loved it, and yes I cried.
Where do I start? What a read. Loved the storyline, it was amazing to read the courage of the French resistance, and the incredible difference they made to the war effort. This was a complete 'girl power' novel, as the two sisters and their Father completed many heroic acts.
Excellent, I got very involved with the characters and sometimes could not continue to read on for fear that they would be caught. But then had to get back to see if all was going to plan. Very involving story, highly recommended to those that like the stories from the war period.
