If this book was called "how to create a neocortex" I would give it 5 stars. It is a pleasant read but It conveniently ignores current medical research on consciousness while focusing on philosophical views in order to promote the author's opinion (which is very human centric by the way). It does not address the integrative capabilities of the mind (other than hierarchical thinking) and minimises the importance of older brain regions such as the thalamus. I recommend reading "Ward, L. M. The thalamic dynamic core theory of conscious experience. Consciousness and Cognition (2011)" as a complement to this book.
