Conan Doyle reveals his age's fascination with the palaeological world; a world that was only just beginning to be described (sometimes comically and wrongly) in the late 19th century. But this novel is about more than just finding a lost world filled with prehistoric marvels. It is about larger than life characters, the Victorian age with its whimsies and divisions, the perfidious impulsiveness of women (one wonders if MR Doyle was not something of a misogynist)... it is also funny and filled with regard for a world that seemed impossibly large and wondrous before the modern gaze of documentary and packaged tourism had ruined it. This is Conan Doyle doing Rider Haggard and doing it well.
A pleasure to hold this nice hardcover edition. Well printed and designed with beautiful classic illustrations and easy on eye print. High quality book one can display proudly, and comes for a very reasonable price.
I have always enjoyed the books by Arthur Conan Doyle but the lost word probably his best works. It is a great way to an adventure in another world with out leaving one's lounge chair. the heroic adventure that the characters have to endure, and the hardship in which they suffer is all to true to the reader. there is an air of mystery in some of the story but it all adds up to a good yarn, it is a book one would read again.
