The Bosch PBD 40 Bench Drill

The PBD 40 bench drill is especially accurate and very easy to use thanks to its technical features, with a 710 watt universal motor replacing the classical belt drive found in conventional bench drills. This means that the speed can be variably adjusted using the rotary knob. The troublesome task of retensioning the belt is now a thing of the past. The PBD 40 is also equipped with two gears and a Constant Electronic control system that prevents the speed from dropping when drilling in hard materials. With an integrated laser to assist with drilling and an LED light to ensure that the work area is well lit, the Bosch PBD 40 is the premium Bench Drill for passionate DIYers.

Technical data

  • Power input: 710 W
  • Max. drilling diameter in steel: 13 mm
  • Max. drilling diameter in wood: 40 mm
  • Machine weight: 11.2 kg
  • No-load speed: 1st gear 200–850 rpm
  • No-load speed: 2nd gear 600-2500 rpm

Highly versatile

The Bosch PBD 40 is versatile and can be used both in furniture and model making, as well as handicraft and restoration work. Its maximum drilling depth is 40 mm in wood and 13 mm in steel. Its keyless chuck makes light work of tool changes.

Comfortable and effortless work

The PBD 40 bench drill is lowered using the setting wheel with softgrip surface. The 710 W drive unit in the PBD 40 is mounted so that the entire motor block also moves as the drill bit is lowered, rather than only the drill bit itself, so the work height remains constant. This makes drilling effortless, allowing you to save your energy.

High functionality

The PBD 40 has two gears. First gear delivers high power, while the second gear produces high speed. The Constant Electronic function ensures a consistent speed on the PBD 40 – even when drilling into hard materials.

Digital display

The PBD 40 has continuously variable speed adjustment so that you can set the required speed. This provides DIY enthusiasts with optimum control of the drilling process.

The PBD 40 also has a digital depth measurement feature, i.e. the drilling depth reached can be viewed conveniently and at any time on the digital display.

Controlled precision

Unlike hand-held drills, the bit of the PBD 40 always penetrates the work material vertically. This produces precise drilling results and controlled drilling processes for repeated drilling depths. An integrated laser serves as a drilling aid here.

Maintains clamping force even during heavy use

Drill chuck with automatic tightening maintains a strong clamping force, even during heavy projects. The chuck tightens the drill bit automatically, which eliminates the need for wrenches or manual adjustment of drill bits.

Consistent power and speed

The Constant Electronic function ensures a consistent speed on the PBD 40 – even when drilling into hard materials. It also adapts to the load while maintaining speed, for excellent results without the risk of overload.

Effective lighting for clarity

The integrated lighting has efficient, built-in LED lights that illuminate the work surface so that you can work in dark spaces and corners.

Good drill. But very very poor chuck labelling.

Good drill. But very very poor chuck labelling.
Overall, no complaints on the drill performance. However, the labelling of the chuck lock and unlock is terribly placed and labelled. Had more or less destroyed my chuck, thinking it was stuck because the labelling of the "unlock" was actually "lock", and "lock" was actually "unlock". Although the chuck had arrows showing which direction is to unlock and lock, it isnt very suitable, because the chuck could be "unocked" and if you follow the arrow of "unlocking" you are essentially locking it. Terrible design.Bosch should really just have 2 lines, you just twist the chuck to match the line that is locked or unlock. Rather than try indicate the directions of the twist.

I’ve been a carpenter/builder for over 30yrs and I have never used a drill press in my life before. Being out onsite, everything is mostly done using hand power tools. I’ve recently started doing projects at home, and was looking for a drill press for accuracy and repetition type of work that wasn’t too large. This here is the bomb for what I’m doing. The reviews are pretty much spot on (the positive reviews that is). I don’t understand the negative reviews, there is none, unless it’s a lemon. This thing is portable, has digital readout, is sturdy, has speed adjustment, and what is great for me is that the manual depth stop, the digital depth readout that is extremely accurate from what I’ve measured it against, are features I never thought much about until I started playing with this machine. These two things make repetition work just simple now. The clamp is another thing that has been needed, but never thought of beforehand also. Laser & work light are both easy to see & accurate on my machine. I don’t pre punch holes in my work, I trust my eyes, the laser, and the way I drill the hole, and it is spot on. The drill press is good, trust it. The wheel thing that brings the press down was a little weird at first, but I’ve gotten used to it now & isn’t an issue. The only thing I’ve added was a few fences I made to make repetitive work a breeze and really professional looking. I put pix up Incase others are interested. Just slide what you’re working on, & drill the next hole between the two fences. It’s got me tidying up a heap of drill bits & router bits of all kinds that were cluttered in tool boxes before. As others have mentioned, it has a very slight run off, but “slight” it is. Nothing to worry about unless you’re making clockwork pieces. There has been no stress in drilling 10mm holes in brass, 5mm aluminium or any type of wood I’ve tried. I’ve tried to stress it abit but the machine powers on , no problems. The chuck is ok, I’ve had worse & don’t think it will be changed out unless it plays up abit. Tighten reasonably well with hands and then switch the red locking device to the right and I rarely get any slip at all. I picked this up (I think) on the Black Friday sales for a ridiculously low price and I’d be happy to pay full price now knowing what I know about this drill press. Five words- THINK NO LONGER BUY THIS -

    The great things:

    - Relatively portable
    - Digital Depth Gauge (accurate)
    - Variable speed (high and low torque modes)
    - Sturdy
    - Mechanical depth stop
    - Machined aluminium base (dimensionally flat)
    - Worklight
    - Laser alignment guide (accurate enough)
    - Soft start
    - You can drill through the hole in the base plate. Means you can drill accurate holes in flat surfaces so long as you can clamp the drill press to the work surface, or weigh it down.

    Some info

    - Maximum distance between the bottom of the Chuck and Base-plate is 285 mm

    Not so great things:

    - Tad noisy but no worse than any corded electric drill
    - Silly plastic safety shield, but removed with two screws

    The only bad thing:

    - Drill direction not reversible (reverse drill bits are great for extracting stuck bolts).

BTW I saw a few complaints about runout (one quoting 0.5 mm). This is a bench-press drill not a mill. That sort of runout is completely within tolerance of this class of tools. Good even. Center-punch your work accurately and your position will be point accurate at least.

The manual is ambiguous. I discovered that when lowering the unit to drill a hole. It went only a certain distance and then stopped. The drill bit was still several centimeters above the base plate so I could not use the PBD 40 at all !! By going on Google I found several reviews and demonstrations, which gave me a clue that it was possible to bring the drill bit down to the working level. This still was not clear as to how to do it exactly, but at least I knew what levers to employ. I finally, purely by accident, found out how I could get the drill bit to go even deeper than the surface of the base plate. It ook me many other steps and trials to work out how the Depth stop rod could work. I am still uncertain how it works. It's a beautiful piece of engineering but the manual made it impossible for me to understand the vague instructions. I believe this was caused by poor translation as is so often the case with foreign build things. In other cases I look at the other languages and usually find that certain things are not mentioned in every language or are mistranslated. As Bosch is German I would have liked to have the German text available but these were removed from the manual.
There are further problems with the user manual for the Bosch PBD 40 Drill Stand:

First of all, the images of te various parts and procedures are on a number of pages in the front. This means I have to keep on flipping back and forth from the text to find the appropriate image. All the images should be on a long sheet that can be folded out so that all images are simultaneously visible while reading the explanatory text.

    Page 13:
    Inserting the application tool:
Turn the securing ring (28) in the Unlock direction.
There is no indication what this direction is.

With the clamping sleeve wide enough fully insert the drill bit, hold the bit in place and turn the clamping sleeve (30) anticlockwise firmly by hand. When doing so, hold the retaining ring (29) firmly in place.
This means I need 3 hands to accomplish this.
I discovered I don’t need to hold the retaining ring (29) at all. Mind you, several times after I inserted the drill bit all the way and tightened the clamping sleeve (30) and then locked the securing ring (28) the drill bit fell out and I had to repeat the procedure several times before I was successful. Moreover it is not easy to get a small drill bit inserted as it becomes unclear where the opening is because of the odd shape of the chuck teeth compared to a regular hand drill.

Only operate the clamping lever (7) when the hand wheel is in its initial position.
    What is the initial position?

    Page 14:
Under General Advice: slow down the feed motion towards the end of the drilling procedure.
    What is the feed motion?

    Page 15:
Setting the drilling depth (see figure J).
No idea what is meant. Move the depth stop up or down? How does this actually work.

Just so you know my English is fluent so that is not the problem. Luckily I speak several language so I don't mind instructions in any of these languages and can be helpful when learning how to use some item I purchased. I almost disassembled the machine and sent it back to Amazon, but persevered.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very useful bench pillar drill.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 August 2022

The media could not be loaded.
I've now had this for 4 months, so i would like to think I can now give a sensible, calculated review.

The drill arrives in 2 main pieces. All you need to do is attached the base plate to the drill, tighten up the allen screw, and you're good to go.

You can bolt the base plate to your work surface, via the 4 corner holes. It also comes with a clamp that fits on the bottom of the pillar. It's not really necessary to the work I do, but it seems to work ok.

Operation of the drill is super easy. On the right hand side you have a 2 speed selector switch.

Speed 1 giving you a speed of 200-850 rpms, and speed 2, 600-2590 rpms.

There is a useful little table on the side of the drill, giving you recommended speeds for drilling aluminium and steel. (With wood, you can pretty much drill as fast as you like.) Although I tend to go slightly lower then they recommend, particularly with large bits into steel.
(Whenever you are drilling metal, don't forget to use lots of lovely cutting fluid, to help to keep your bit cool).

Adjustments of speed is via the main knob on the front. It's very good under load, with the drill constantly adjusting the speed as the torque increases and decreases to keep it at your dialled in speed.

It also has a very accurate depth stop, which you set with the upper of the two column levers. You can then switch the display from showing rpms to mms. I've found it very accurate, with great repeatability. I didn't think I would be using it much but, due to it's accuracy I use it a lot.

It also has a built in light (very useful), and a built in laser (not so useful, but still nice to have). These are turned on and off by separate switches on the front.

It also has a very good emergency stop button, where you can just hit the on/off button to turn off. You may find that like me, you turn it off this way a lot of the time.

The chuck isn't the best, and my original intention was to swap it out, for a more accurate model. However in use, it works well, and as you can see from the attached video, on my drill the run out accuracy is around 0.01mm. Which for a drill at this price is pretty amazing.
The only quibble I have with it, is that the smallest bit it accepts is 1.5mm, and I know there will be occasions, where I will want to drill 1mm.

The controlling handle is something I don't particularly like. There is a reason that every other pillar drill has always had a 3 spoked handle, and that's because it works the best.
For drilling wood, the provided handle is fine, but when drilling big holes in steel, you need a lot of downward pressure, and with the wheel type, I find that difficult to consistently achieve. I swapped mine for a traditional 3 spoke, and for me, it works a lot better. It's an easy swap.

Overall, I'm very happy. The drill has a powerful 710w motor, a lot more powerful than any others at this price.
Ergonomically it works really well, and certainly in my case, is super accurate. I would happily recommend it.

I hope you found this review helpful.

A small update. I've now had this drill for 2 years, and it is still working wonderfully. I've not had a single issue, and its had a lot of use. Very pleased.

Very good machine, but returned due to an issue with the unlocking feature, i.e., after drilling metal, you cannot detach the bit or unlock it easily. You must use a screwdriver or any other tool to detach the bit.

If like me you do not have a dedicated workshop or you need to move the drill every time you use it, this is ideal. I used to have a drill stand that used one of my hand drills, it had a solid steel shaft and a cast-iron table and it was extremely heavy. The PBD 40 is a game changer, its much lighter and easy to carry to and from my work area. The speed adjustment is very good and the depth gauge is very accurate and makes setting up very quick. The lazer is not very accurate but that's not something I would use. Some reviewers complain about the play in the chuck, but in use it make no difference to the operation if you mark your wood correctly or centre punch metal.
As you can see I made a new table to go on top of the aluminium one. This gives me a larger working area which has T-Tracks for clamps and a fence, I have also fitted the Ottertools Turnstile in place of the wheel.
Anyone thinking about purchasing on of these, my advise is to go ahead because you wont be dissapointed.
