Mystery woman, Martha Toolin is murdered in a village in Norfolk, then later, a body is washed up on the nearby beach. 'The Liar' (book 4) is a simple, but catchy title by Jane Adams, in the DI Mike Croft Series.
In this book, Mike and Jude investigate the information collected by Martha, regarding her ancestry. She had been assisted in her research by retired DI, John Tynan, as there was an apparent family connection and then, a romance developed.
'The Liar' has a busy plot, as well as a cast of characters, but I felt Jane handled the complexities cleverly and it never seemed crowded. Jane kept my interest, by including lots of secrets, lies, puzzles and twists. (There's even a large, black, vicious dog roaming about; associated with the supernatural and past folklore.)
I really enjoyed the level of suspense and the collegial bond between Mike and John added depth to the narrative. However, I felt the ending was a bit rushed and there were a few untied threads that let down an otherwise cracking story.
