My new favorite series, I'm addicted and loving this fierce, sassy tomboy named Wild. Her POV is hilarious with her internal ramblings and nicknames for various characters throughout the book. A deadly volun-told assignment to an academy that takes only the best of all magical students. I enjoyed the humour, action, Wild's ability to bring random people together and her wile smarts. I can't wait until the next book as the hidden plots add even more. Highly recommend.
The main thing I love about this book is that it is setting up what will be an awesome ride for the rest of the series. Yeah, it was a little short for my liking, but certainly didn't dawdle. It was engaging, entertaining and effortless to read and enjoy. These authors know how to write interesting characters and story lines that don't always follow convention. Their dialogue is as sharp as always and the characters, while often weird, are also weirdly relatable.
Wild, the heroine, is really easy to like and I think we will see a lot of character development from her and others. Wild has drawn to herself some unusual companions, but that's what makes this book work so well. K F Breene is especially good a writing her "supporting" characters in such a way that they become favourites as quickly as her heroines. Let's just hope Shannon doesn't kill them off.
I definitely recommend this book if you enjoy entertaining YA fantasy reads that provide the perfect escape. They aren't trying to be serious, but they are there to have fun. I am already on countdown for the next book.
Wow, just wow, what a great start to a series. Im hooked....take my money. So exciting, so different. The characters personality's just scream at you, but how could i expect anything less with 2 of my favourite authors.
Shadowspell Academy: The Culling Trials by Shannon Mayer and K.F. Breene two of my favorite authors. Collaborating together they are explosive. It is a YA but doesn’t necessarily feel like it. Their quirky minds melded beautifully to give us a story that is wonderfully woven. The story is full of action and intrigue and there is never a dull moment, whether death is at your door or the humour of the characters that have you laughing out loud.
Wild discovers that there are a heck of a lot more than humans in the world and she learns there is more to what has happened to her family than she had known. Protecting her brother leads her to a world where the supernatural beings not only exist but is the norm.
Grab a copy you will not be disappointed. I am anxiously awaiting the next one.
Magical academy books seem to be having a renaissance at the moment. This one is worth the read. Girl pretends to be boy, discovers magic is real and has to do a Goblet of Fire/Hunger Games trial. I always love in these books how everyone is all 'yeah, we love a good death obstacle course' like it's totally normal. :) I really liked the side characters in this one. The MC Wild is great too. Looking forward to seeing how it develops in book 2. One complaint is the ending seemed a bit rushed. It's more like a cliffhanger at the end of a chapter than the end of a book. I read this on Kindle Unlimited.
