Beyond the Horizon by Ella Carey is a novel about the brave American women who joined the Women’s Airforce Service Pilots Scheme (WASP) during WW2. The novel is told in two storylines and shows how the past is always with us and impacts on future generations. Ella Carey travelled from Australia to Sweetwater, Texas to research this novel and she also has a personal family history link to that time as her parents were both members of the air force, her father flew for the Royal Air Force in Europe, and her mother joined the Women’s Australian Auxiliary Airforce as a teenager. Beyond the Horizon tells the story of Eva Scott and the wonderful friendships she made with this special group of women. They learned to fly in five months of training at Avenger Field in Sweetwater, under difficult circumstances. After they graduated they were sent to Camp Davis in Carolina where disaster strikes Eva. The later thread of the story is equally as riveting when Eva is embroiled in the fight to get military recognition for the WASP. Eva now has to confront the past and make a decision that could forever change her future.
From the back cover: Thrilling and inspiring, Beyond the Horizon is a portrait of love, friendship, and valor in a time of war–a tribute to the brave women who risked their life for their country.
From the Horizon by Ella Carey is a wonderful story.
Do yourself a favour and read the brilliant new historical novel by Ella Carey. I was captivated from the very beginning of this spellbinding tale. If you are looking for a story which is an amazing mix of courage and adventure, I can certainly recommend this as your next read. I was unable to put it down and finished it in a few reading sessions.
The novel tells the story of a group of young female pilots who served as WASPs (Women Air force Service Pilots) during World War II. The lead character is Eva Scott and it tell the tale of Eva’s life before acceptance into the WASP training program, the challenges she faced during training and beyond. The story also details Eva’s journey as she seeks military recognition for the WASP decades after her service finished.
With many unexpected twists and turns, this is one that you won’t want to miss. It kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end. Without even realising it, the characters worked their way into my heart and I simply had to know how things turned out for them. It is a beautiful story of female friendship and the support they showed one another during very trying circumstances.
This novel is an amazing tribute to the brave women who served during World War II who put their lives at risk for their country. Despite being fictional, I feel that this novel gave me new insight into historical events that I previously knew little about. It has certainly inspired me to do my own research into this significant part of history.
