Busy London-based, Professional Matchmaker, Celine was married to Mike for some years. He was a good husband and they share an eleven year old daughter, but Celine didn't have that 'wham' feel for him. Around fifteen years earlier (in Vietnam), she knew Patrick for a brief four days and there was definitely that 'wow' factor.
'The Last Time We Met' has the theme: love and choices. Do you take the safer opinion or the more impulsive one? Head or heart? The book explores: just what are our motivations in relationships and what influences our decision-making? Can you blend both passion and sensibility? Ultimately, is it a matter of trusting your own instincts?
Carol Mason portrays the complex circumstances with sympathy, knowledge and humour. The chapters are short, the pacing is perfect and her writing style is fluid. She also includes drama, a little serendipity and a satisfying ending. The main characters are well-developed with both strengths and fallibilities. There are a lot of entertaining secondary characters, but they do seem to crowd the storyline, somewhat. It's not a major distraction, though.
Along with all the positives, there are several interesting and thought-provoking elements raised in this emotional and heartfelt contemporary romance. Fans of the genre should love it!
