I had to read this book straight through. Grisham takes us back to rural Mississippi just after the war. This is well done whether or not the reader is able to understand this bygone era.
A decorated war hero shoots the local preacher and then does not defend himself at trial. John describes the post war rural south and its customs extremely well. And describes the ghastly war in the Philippines with the same eye to detail.
At the end the story seems to drag as the consequences play out.
I was so disappointed in this book. I’d been looking forward to it for months. I usually love Grisham’s books. This one was very slow moving with lots of time devoted to storylines that didn’t add much value to the story.
It had the potential to be great. The premise was good, the time period interesting and if chapters about Pete’s time in the Phillipines referred back to the primary storyline the book could have been very good.
I was really hoping for a Grisham twist, something to save the day but it was entirely predictable and just fizzled out.
