This is one of my all time favourite books. It relates to an era when life seemed simpler although they had many of their own unique problems and challenges to face. James Herriot was a keen observer of human and animal behavior and his recollections from his life as a country vet in Yorkshire, England are funny, sad, inspiring and heartwarming.
James Herriot is the pseudonym of a Yorkshire veterinarian. He wrote semi-autobiographical stories of his experiences, starting with this book.
It tells you the story of the beginning of his professional career, including his employer, the animals and their owners, and the Yorkshire countryside.
The book has the air of authenticity you would expect. It's written in a delightfully engaging style, showing the care and love which Herriot has for the propel, the animals and the place which becomes his home.
While this book was written in 1972, it remains a timeless classic.
