I stumbled upon Ilona Andrews when I first downloaded the kindle app on my laptop two years ago. I have read every one of their books since and most of them I have then gone and reread and still absolutely loved them. And Burn for Me is no different. This was my second time reading this book and I could not put it down. Nevada Baylor is realistic and hardworking. The love she has for her family and the willingness to do anything for them is commendable. And Connor "Mad" Rogan is both dangerous and sexy and immediately the reader is lured in to feel an attraction for him. Ilona Andrews are great at world building. All the worlds that they create in their novels are so unique and full of details and yet not once do they bore the reader with overly descriptive paragraphs or information dumps. The amount of research the authors must do for each book is astounding. I am not someone who is familiar with artillery and armored vehicles but the confidence in which these items are included makes me believe that these items are the real deal. Burn For Me builds on itself and continues to have one greedily turning the pages. The only negative is that it had to end. Am literally just about to read the second book and cannot wait!
When I heard that Ilona Andrews was wrapping up her Kate Daniels series I panicked, then dove deep into the rabbit hole that was her bibliography to see if I could discover something new that would assuage the urban fantasy kick I was on.
Thankfully I discovered Burn for Me, quite by accident, and in it I have found some truly great characters with some of the quirkiest personalities. Nevada’s family is a chaotic free-for-all, but they adore each other. Then there is Rogan. Oh, boy. He’s an interesting mixture of Alpha male - think Curran but with almost unlimited magical power - and hard arsed ex-military practicality. Definitely a relationship I’m there for.
There are a myriad of secondary characters that also stand out. Augustine is such a jerk, yet necessary because he sets in motion the hunt for Adam Pierce (spoiled brat Prime with mommy issues and a sadistic streak), plus we encounter characters that will play a much larger role in future books.
This was so fast paced and full of action and adventure that even though there is little to none of the usual romance drek that is shoehorned into a good portion of UF books, I loved the characters so much that I just didn’t care.
First up, I want to say the cover & title for this book are rubbish. It makes the book look like some superficial, over the top paranormal romance.
This is an extremely fast paced action/adventure with a smart, confident female lead and a brilliant supporting cast. The romance is there, sure, but you can tell this is a couple who have a lot to work out before they'll find their happily ever after. They've got chemistry in spades, but the rest is still to come.
The setting is our world, but with magic, in which our heroine tries to keep her investigative business afloat while simultaneously supporting a large, loving family. Forced into accepting a job that might just kill her, Nevada is suddenly thrown into the chaos and forced to sink or swim. And she swims. Amazingly.
There is so much about this series that I love, and this first book contains all of the best bits. Fast pacing, hilarious dialogue, lots of sexy tension, and edge of your seat action scenes.
If I had to make a complaint, it's that Ilona Andrews walk a fine line in writing Mad Rogan's character. Our Hero is pretty flawed, acting possessive & dominant in ways that aren't as attractive as many authors like to pretend they are. Thankfully Nevada is strong enough to call him out on this, and as a result you can see the power dynamic shift between them, especially as we move into the next two books in the series.
This has to be one of my favourite series. I genuinely hope Ilona Andrews can get time/money to continue writing in this world, because you can tell there are many stories here just waiting to be told.
First up i would recommend anything by Ilona Andrews. I like that this story and the setting is different to Kate Daniels series, the Edge series and the InKeeper series. I read all the series and I like that they are different. The characters of Nevada and Connor "Mad" Rogan are strong and they are different. I like that fact that Nevada has her family around her and her family are strong characters. To see Women in family as strong and supportive and have sisters and the cousins shown in a good light. Nevada will protect her family and will protect them from Rogan at all cost. Rogan and Nevada have the chemistry that is hot and a relationship that will continue to developed and the mystery that needs to be explain. It is a great combination. I hope to see more stories on the characters
Burn for me is an urban fantasy novel by Ilona Andrews, who happens to be one of my favourite authors. If you have read any of their other books and enjoyed them, you can stop reading this review and go buy the book.
Burn for Me takes place in an alternate version of our modern world where a serum was discovered that unlocked magic powers in humans who took it. Things quickly got out of control, and the serum was locked up, but it was too late — too many people had taken the concoction and were passing their powers on to their children genetically. Fast-forward a number of generations and you have our world, but where magic houses dominate society. Nevada Baylor has magic, but isn't one of those houses. She runs her family's PI business, works hard, and only takes jobs she's confident she can handle. Small-time stuff like fraud and cheating spouses. Then Mad Rogan, the Scourge of Mexico, walks into her life and playing it safe isn't an option.
You could class this as urban fantasy or paranormal romance, both genres fit. If you worry about labels which include "romance", don't. Burn for Me has a strong romantic story-line, but it is also an amazing, action-filled urban fantasy. The world fills unique and is (as always with Andrews) wonderfully realised. The characters are engaging, and the plot had me inhaling this book in record time — I couldn't put it down.
#Update to say the series is now finished and you shouldn't miss it
I first read this in 2014 and I loved it. I've recently read it again and I still love it.
The world building is extreamly well done. Enough detail to make sense and be really interesting without getting bogged in the detail. It really pulls you into the world and makes you feel apart of it. I read a lot of paranormal romance and so few do it without inconsistencies in the plot and I think only Kresley Cole in her early works is a match for Ilona Andrews in pacing and witty dialogue.
I loved Navada, she was smart and compassionate. She really is trying her best. She is confident with a realistic level of insecurities. This does straddle the genre of dark romance, we meet Rogan when he decides to torchure Navada into answering questions and it doesn't faze him to kill people who stand in the way of what he wants. I really enjoyed how his character developed as the story progressed.
I originally gave this 5 stars and immediately ordered the next instalment. That was 2 years ago and I'm still waiting. I see now that they have reconfirmed the release for mid 2017. It's a long time for a book that is a part of a series, there is no HEA and a lot of unfinished business. I've also since read a number of other ilona Andrews books. I think this is the best of their work, but it is very much to their formula, the Kate Daniels series in particular. There are a few things that bug my about the formula, the class divides, the disdain for education it's more subtle in this book but still there.
This book was awesome! I knew it would be brilliant as it's Ilona Andrews, but it was even better than I expected.
Nevada was such a great character. She was kickass, loyal, honest, had great morals, and would do anything for her loved ones. She is not afraid to tell it like it is, even to a powerful Prime, and she is also stubborn.
Mad Rogen..what can I say about him? He's hot, filthy rich, unbelievably powerful, and dangerous. Nevada appears on Mad's radar when they start looking for the same powerful bad guy, so they begin a tentative partnership of sorts to use each other/ work together to find him. They have very different work ethics (Mad more than happy to hurt someone if it suits him) so it's a very rocky start with little trust between them. Their relationship is a slow burn, but a very hot one!
this book is just about perfect for me. Humour, romance and action. The heroine is very responsible, yet feisty, with interesting relatives. This seems to be a hard thing for authors to get right. Side characters can enhance or completely ruin a story. Her mum and grandma are awesome. Our hero, however, is completely arrogant and anti-social, but you have to love the big doofus anyway.
I don't think there are any ground-breaking ideas here, but it is written so well. The Ilona Andrews team strike gold again. My only problem is that the release date for the sequel is 'delayed'
Like nothing that I have read before, I just could not put this book down. I had to read through the night. The main characters are superbly crafted, you not just like but admire them. The minor characters support the storyline. One of the best books I have read in a long time. I am looking forward to the next instalment.
I am a great fan of the Kate Daniels series and I was really hesitant to start this new series just in case it wasn't going to be as good. Well I am sorry I waited so long; this story is very different but just as good. I loved Nevada Baylor, a strong female protagonist but for once a female still surrounded by her family. In all too many series (including Kate Daniels) the female lead starts off alone because of some circumstance or tragedy. This time there was a tragedy but most of her family are still around and they aren't helpless. They are Nevada's team. What a wonderful change.
The second thing I really like is Mad Rogan. That is a character with so many secrets still be seen. It feels like the reader has barely had a taste of Rogan's depths. I can barely wait for the next book.
Lastly I really enjoyed getting to know the new world and it's magic. I am so tired of reading story after story about hidden creatures living amongst the normals, be they werewolves, fae, witches, vampires etc. This time the unusual walk amongst the normals in the open. It's a welcome change.
