Bookmarks Highlights & Notes

You can add or remove bookmarks, highlights, and notes at any location in a Kindle book or personal document on your Kindle. Help for any Kindle e-reader model (6th Generation) and newer.

Add View or Remove Bookmarks

You can add, view or remove bookmarks at any location in a Kindle book or personal document.

  • Add a bookmark: Tap the top-right corner of the screen while reading to show the Bookmark icon and then tap + in the dialog box that appears. The Bookmark icon will turn black to show that the page you're viewing has been bookmarked.
  • View your bookmarks: Tap the top-right corner of the screen to see your booksmarks for that title. You can also tap the top of the screen to show the reading toolbar and then tap the Bookmarks icon. Tap a bookmark in the list to see a preview of that location in the book. Tap the preview window to go to that location in the book. Tap outside of the preview window to return to your reading.

  • Remove a bookmark: Tap the top-right corner of the screen to show your bookmarks, select a bookmark from the list and then tap x to remove the bookmark.

Add View or Remove Highlights

You can add, view, remove or share highlights at any location in a Kindle book or personal document.

  • Add a highlight: When you select more than 5 words at a time, they will automatically be highlighted. Tap Undo in the highlight window to remove the highlight. If you want to highlight across multiple pages, press and drag to highlight the desired text to the bottom-right corner of the screen and the page will turn. The highlight will automatically continue to the first period on the next page.
  • View your highlights: Tap the top of the screen to show the reading toolbar, tap the Menu icon and then tap Notes. Tap a highlight to go to that location.
    Tip: You can also tap Go To in the reading toolbar and then tap the Notes tab.
  • Remove a highlight: Tap the highlight while reading and then tap Delete to remove the highlight.
  • Share a highlight: Tap the top of the screen to show the reading toolbar, tap the Menu icon and then tap Notes. Tap Share to share the highlight via Goodreads, Facebook or Twitter.If you'd prefer, you can also share the highlight via email.

Add View Edit or Remove Notes

You can add, view, edit or remove notes at any location in a Kindle book or personal document.

  • Add a note:
    1. Press and hold a word or press and drag to highlight the desired text. Tap Add Note and then type your desired text.
    2. Tap Save to create your note.
  • View, Remove or Edit a note:
    1. Tap the top of the screen to show the reading toolbar, tap the Menu icon and then tap Notes.
      Tip: You can also tap Go To in the reading toolbar and then tap the Notes tab.
    2. Tap a note to go to that location in the book. Tap Edit to modify or delete the note.

Popular Highlights

Amazon displays Popular Highlights by combining the highlights of all Kindle customers and identifying the passages with the most highlights.

  • To turn on Popular Highlights:

    1. While reading, tap the top of the screen to show the reading toolbar.
    2. Tap the Menu icon and then tap Settings.
    3. Tap Reading Options and then tap Highlights & About This Book.
    4. Next to Popular Highlights tap On.

    When you return to reading, highlights people have frequently selected start appearing while you read.

  • To view a list of Popular Highlights:

    1. While reading, tap the top of your screen to show the reading toolbar.
    2. Tap the Menu icon, and then tap Notes.
      Tip: You can also tap Go To in the reading toolbar, and then tap the Notes tab.
    3. Tap the Popular tab to view Popular Highlights.
