This has been one of my favourite books since I was about ten. To my great delight, it also became one of my daughter's favourite books. It shimmers with magic, which has a dusting of the supernatural about it but, like most of Elizabeth Goudge's work, is mainly to do with people finding their own depths and daring to explore there. The magic also comes from the expansive kindness between quite ordinary human beings. Goudge has a wonderful belief in kindness, while being perfectly aware that the world can be a dark and scary place. It has been a good few years since I read this book last, and I'm delighted to find that the magic is still there, while my older self sees even more levels in the story. Highly recommended!
