This book is an addition to the Pony Jumpers series, and focuses on Jonty, who is the boyfriend of one of the major characters in that series and an important character in his own right. It gives us his backstory, and it is a nice change to read a modern pony book where the main character is not a teenaged girl. It works very well as a standalone novel. As always with Lattey's novels, both human and equine characters are well-drawn. Jonty has a difficult home life and the way he matures as the story progresses is believable. Everything is not tied up in a neat bow at the end, either; his life is definitely a work in progress. Although the books are aimed at teen/young adult readers, they are enjoyable for readers of any age who like horses and a good story.
