I was absolutely enchanted by this book. The romance is gorgeous but that aspect is buttressed by the extensive exploration of the concept of science vs art (mirrored in the protagonists), what art even is, the value of traditionally female art forms such as textile work and how it is compared poorly with more male media. The author has a real gift for describing beauty, be it a delicate piece of embroidery or the night sky. I loved how the two halves of the science/art coin were united in the shawl Catherine made for Lucy, the description of which was so vivid I gasped out loud. I probably should have seen the Olèron thing coming sooner than I did, but I DID pick up on it before the reveal, so I'm not a total doof.
