Magnificent idea for the world - it's like Star Trek meets Firefly meets Pirates of the Caribbean. YES PLEASE.
But the character development is poor almost across the board, and the space battles are not quite described in enough detail to relive them, which is a shame because the books quickly become almost entirely one series of space battle after another. The characters are often making ludicrous decisions that don't ring true (Drake nearly killing EVERYONE to rescue his parents who when disappear from the story completely is just... ugh) and I stopped when he suddenly decides, with no context out of thin air, to develop a romantic relationship with the pining love interest.
It was THIS close to being good, but fell apart quickly.
