There are perhaps quite a number of 'fan guides' to The Simpsons available. I have a copy of Planet Simpsons which was released quite some time back now and, since then, I can't say I've really seen all that much; I'm very thankful then to have stumbled across this new title and been able to spend some time rejoicing with other fans as they recount some background details to the various seasons (focusing here on season 1 through 9) and then covering in more detail one or two episodes form each of those seasons.
The authors are apparently in charge of a Podcast from which much of the material is derived and so I suppose if you're already aware of the 'Founr Finger Discount' podcast you might have already covered the content. If not - or, I suppose, because of that - then I think this is aa worthwhile addition to any Simpsons fan who might want the opportunity to have these guys provide a summary of several episodes, offer up some trivia that I certainly wasn't aware of and, in general, relish the opportunity to revisit some of the best The Simpsons put up during its prime years.
Planet Simpsons probably remains a more favoured publication and the one I'd recommend (if you can find a copy.) This is slightly leaner, lighter in detail and doesn't offer as much in the way of some of the more quotable lines from the episodes that Planet Simpsons offers. However, this is probably just enough for most people who perhaps haven't spent much time with the show like they did before or, as a gift, this would be a welcome addition to any fan's library. Alas - still! - there seems no licensing deal that makes it easy to watch the episodes in question so it's case of those monotonous DVDs that seemed to have been produced when all manner of noise and gimmickry was all the rage in the menu system.
The book does offer the final bonus of being able to offer up the opportunity to suggest you've been reading 'Homer's Odyssey' across the weekend and, amongst the impressed glances, you can find double satisfaction in realising that meant re-considering the finer points of Colonel Homer rather than ancient Greek dude.
Great stuff and thanks to the authors for bringing their appreciation to the show in this format.
