The Little White Horse is a wonderful, timeless children's classic set in Victorian times. Maria Merryweather, newly orphaned at the age of thirteen, travels with her governess Miss Heliotrope to live with Maria's cousin Sir Benjamin Merryweather at Moonacre Manor in the West Country village of Silverydew. They are made welcome in this idyllic setting, but Maria soon notices that there are mysteries to be solved, lessons to be learned and wrongs to be righted. There are so many things to praise in this book; the beauty of the prose, the magic of the setting and situations, the plot, the characters and the life lessons. Framing it all are the fleeting appearances of the little white horse (no, it's not a unicorn). Like all the best children's books, this is one that can be enjoyed by readers of any age.
