Jeanette Winterson is one of my most admired authors. Reading her personal story has made me want to re-read all of her books now that I have a view into what has motivates her writing.

I would recommend this book to anyone who has been through the pain of adoption. Or simply anyone interested in life and love with its inevitable twists, turns and pain. Written with such raw emotional honesty, she describes her early life and the long and painful journey of coming to terms with with her pasts, (for we have more than one, all intertwined).

The journey is long, arduous, beautifully and emotionally written and she comes to reconcile these pasts with who she is, (someone she quite likes) and how these pasts have made her into the successful writer she is.

I was left with hope at the end of the book. Hope that through all the pain of love, loss and other life messes, that we can learn make a kind of peace with our past selves and accept and love ourselves despite or because of our pasts.
