The Lydia Crow series is a new one and it’s seriously good. The first book in the series was a little tentative, but with the publication of the second the author has hit her stride.

The cast of characters is full of interest, from the independent Lydia Crow, her sinister Uncle Charlie and Jason the mathematical ghost.

The world-building is deft and fresh; the author willing to take her time to let the details reveal themselves. There’s no rush to make everything clear, but a steady accretion of detail which builds the readers interest.

In a publishing universe over-full of heroines with shoe fixations and musclebound werewolves, the London of the four magical families is a refreshing change.

If you enjoy writers of straight crime such as Sue Grafton, then Lydia Crow might well appeal. And if you’re a Rivers of London fan, then this series has lots to engage you.
