After THE TALISMAN and BLACK HOUSE, Gwendy's Button Box is the first co-authored work of Mr King's that i have read. I was terrified by the start, not by the box, or the creepy nature of the scene between our young Gwendy and Mr Farris, but by Mr Richard Farris himself. The true stuff of nightmare, a fantastic creation with potential evil simply oozing out of every pore, every fibre of his being.
But then he leaves the mystery box with Gwendy, and he disappears. Leaves the tale for good (until the very end) and the story is all the poorer for it. At times it felt like a YA romance novel, with a minor salute to Mr Kings classic and brilliant NEEDFUL THINGS. Don't get me wrong, stuff happened. Castle Rock is still a great place to visit, and yes i would want to live there. The ending is a doozie but the books ultimate message - and its ultimate finale - left me sad and let down.
I wanted a full length novel, Mr Farris and his ominous overtones certainly deserved a full length novel, but these desires of mine went west when his hat disappeared at the cliff of Castle View at the end of chapter one. So i award this book three stars out of five. A promising beginning, with terrifying over tones, but the story doesn't get out of first gear.
