Customer Review

1 April 2015
Though not my favourite Steinbeck novel (I have always preferred Cannery Row and Sweet Thursday) I've always had a soft spot for the Hamilton family in this novel, set (mostly) in the Salinas Valley late 19th through to early 20th century. Once upon a time I bought Steinbeck's notion of evil born (the character of Cathy Ames, who is perhaps best described as purely amoral) - now I am not too certain that I can any longer accept such a proposition... Still there is some lovely evocative writing of this part of America and of a time that is perhaps now long gone. Recommended.
