heartbreaking story of how a family had to flee their beloved home and country due to the Soviet invasion. This would eventually cause them to lose their home, their peace and independence, as so harsh was the new government. The description of Kabul painted a modern, harmonious city prior to the invasion. The mother escaped first with only a couple of the kids going to New Delhi in India for heart surgery. The remaining kids with a guide were left to endure an arduous journey over inhospitable terrain and mountains to escape Afghanistan and into Pakistan. This trek taking months. However, I posed some queries regarding their miraculous escape! How did Enjeela survive the encounter with the wolf? How did these kids, now on their own with no guide, survive months in a hotel in Pakistan with very little money? When the father finally turned up he had so many wealthy friends with " contacts". During all this time their mother and the other kids lived in the lap of luxury in New Delhi. With the father's connections with the right people they were eventually able to fly to America where they were able to emigrate.
