Whilst I was hoping it would be more rubbery in texture than hard, I've found lying on it in bed where the surface isn't too rigid and it gives a little seems most effective in helping very long term thoracic spine pain. I position it between my shoulder blades and subsequently I've actually gone for hours without the tearing-type thoracic spine pain. So far so good! Hopefully the longer I persist, the more effective it may be. It's a simply constructed piece of equipment ... sometimes it's the simple things that work the best.
