'Crazy in Love' (my first Annabelle Costa book) is the unique story of two lovable, but flawed people, Anna and Matt. They face separate life-challenges, as the emotional storyline follows their journey through their everday lives. It's told via both MC's overlapping POVs, while they adjust to their circumstances. They are laid bare! These threads connect them, and us readers, concurrently. The timeline is around a six years, so no rushed insta-love here. But, having a relationship proves to be complex.
Medical conditions are realistically addressed in the book, yet it has an insightful, positive, sweet, humourous and quirky approach. It is, however, quite poignant and sad, at times.
As part of my job connects me with similar people to Anna, I thought Annabelle's characterisation was 'spot on' regarding Anna's thought processes and behaviours. Matt's inner conversations were revealing, too.
The plot: Talented computer programmer, Anna 'Lysol' Flint, is different to others around her and her 'oddness' manifests itself in seemingly peculiar ways (especially in the eyes of neurotypicals). Judgement, exclusion and bullying are ever-present. Matt Harper, her work colleague, 'gets' her. Smart and easy going, he has feelings for the pretty, 'crazy', blue-eyed, platinum blonde. Anna is attracted to Matt, but is bound by her compulsions.
Annabelle's honest and individual approach to writing is clever, yet it is simply structured and unembellished. Although it's around a seven hour read, the chapters are short and direct, yet the text is detailed. The MC's lives are quite mundane really, but major events occur. It all makes for interesting contrasts. I liked 'Crazy in Love' very much and look forward to reading more of Annabelle's work.
(Anna wrote a cute letter to readers at the conclusion, btw.)
