Full disclosure, nitro-burning and kickarse as John Birmingham's alt history war-based bestsellers are - and they are - "A Girl In Time" has now overtaken He Died with a Felafel in His Hand as my favourite of his works.
With the eerie prescience he employs to imagines our dystopian near future and the understated but powerful way he brings the characters and their growing relationship, this book literally has something for everyone. Slaves, henchmen, explorers and slipstream sailors everywhere, do yourself a favour and read "A Girl In Time".
Don't go back in time and pretend to have written it yourself, though. The kudos for this one are all JB's.
