5.0 out of 5 stars Great little pfSense box
Reviewed in the United States on 13 May 2019
Bought this to replace a dated MSI WindBox III that was my router for 8 years. Kitted out with 128GB MLC Transend m.2 SATA w/ 1Pb TBW, 4GB Kingston RAM, Dual GbE FACET, and 1080p Headless Dongle. This rig runs on Gigabit internet and is more than capable of reaching the limits with snort.

During install I found some differences w/ the very helpful instructions for the E3950 left here. I've collected my notes on the care and feeding of the J3455 version below.

Type "3" when the pfSense menu comes up then enter the commands from the console:
set hint.hpet.0.clock=0
set hint.sdhci_pci.0.disabled=1
boot

Go through the install process.

Note: the *.local files don't exist by default, you'll create them when editing. Feel free to touch them first.

Before you reboot edit /boot/loader.conf.local

/boot/loader.conf.local:
machdep.disable_msix_migration="1"
hint.sdhci_pci.0.disabled="1"
hint.sdhci_pci.1.disabled="1"
hint.sdhci_pci.2.disabled="1"
legal.intel_ipw.license_ack="1"
legal.intel_iwi.license_ack="1"
hw.vga.textmode="1"

To enable TRIM, after first boot setup, reboot and type "2" for single user at the boot menu. You can't set TRIM while the disk is locked in use in normal multi user mode.

In single user mode:
/sbin/tunefs -t enable /
sync; shutdown -r now

After reboot check TRIM.

8 for shell
tunefs -p /

It should include:
tunefs: trim: (-t) enabled

For the text to be legible on a small 1366x768 monitor after booting with the 1080p headless dongle, edit the below. The headless dongle is used to keep HDMI active when booting headless so you can console in if the need arises.

/boot/loader.rc.local:
mode 2
