Product Description

clutch: a novel is the laugh-out-loud, chick lit romance chronicling the dating misadventures of Caroline Johnson, a single purse designer who compares her unsuccessful romantic relationships to styles of handbags – the “Hobo” starving artist, the “Diaper Bag” single dad, the “Briefcase” intense businessman, etc. With her best friend, bar owner Mike by her side, the overly-accommodating Caroline drinks a lot of Chardonnay, puts her heart on the line, endures her share of unworthy suitors and finds the courage to discover the “Clutch” or someone she wants to hold onto.

5.0 out of 5 stars A light hearted easy read 22 October 2015
By Suze Lavender - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
Review by Tanya

Caroline is set on path of loving handbags and bags by her aunt Mimi and she achieves her goal of designing handbags for a living. On her way of achieving her goal she attends Harvard Business School where she meets Mike Barnsworth. Some of her first words to Mike are “I’m not gonna sleep with . you”. They achieve an amazing friendship even though they are from very different backgrounds. Mike’s family are extremely well off and want him to continue with the family business in the brokerage firm, however he doesn’t want to and he is determined to open his own bar.

When they both finish at Harvard Mike wants to move to L.A. and persuades Caroline to go with him as she can design handbags anywhere and she has friends there already. Eventually Caroline starts looking for a partner and she comes across many a difficult situation with many different men that will have you shocked or giggling. Mike is always there to talk to throughout it. Mike however likes to play the field and doesn’t like the idea of being tied down.

Aunt Mime Johnson is a side character but a very important influence on Caroline’s life and the paths that she takes. I loved the descriptions of her “Despite the largesse, the only thing truly bigger than her personality (and her bosom) was her handbag." In fact I think there would be times when maybe I am described like that. Even Mike speaks highly of her and loves her.

The bond between Mike and Caroline is amazing and I loved how they know what the other is thinking and feeling and how they're always there when the other one needs them. I was greedy for more descriptions of bags or the design process and I put that down to me being a bag lover (or bag lady)!). I would like to read more books by this author as I found it a light hearted easy read that I needed at the time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun Dating Atory for All to Enjoy! 17 November 2015
By Bethany - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
What a fun read! I'm a purse girl all the way - Marc Jacobs, Vera, Kate Spade, just to name a few! Although I am not able to buy as many as I would like being a single mom of three. Someday...I will buy a purse a week versus a purse a season!
OK, enough about me...on to Ms. Caroline Johnson.

As the story begins, she meets this awesome, yet very sarcastic guy, Mike, during her time at Harvard Business School, yes I said HARVARD! He showed up with a coffee, gave it to her and they have been besties ever since! (There was that one time that they slept together, and you will hear about it maybe once or 15 times!)

Catherine has used her love of purses and her Harvard Business degree to start her own business and is doing quite well for herself! She is in several major department stores and has more talks set-up with future sellers frequently. Mike chose not to follow in his families financial footsteps and instead put his business degree to use in setting up his own bar known as The Last Drop. (Based on his love for Risky Business).

When school is over and graduation has commenced Mike asks his best friend in this world, Caroline, to move to LA - not with him but join him there. She thinks for all of 2 seconds and the plans are set!

LA has been a great move for both of them, although their dating lives could say otherwise. Mike has slept with each of his waitresses or so it seems and poor Caroline is truly finding someone to be happy with and she is hitting one dead end after another!

I do not want to give away too many details but I ill state their names and fun nicknames she has associated them with!
Jason Nash - AKA Hobo (starving artist)
Craig - AKA Demi-Bag (shortie/boring)
Tyler - AKA Messenger (religious fanatic)
Sam Stanhope - AKA Doctor Bag (no one could think more highly of themselves then this man)
Damien - AKA Diaper Bag (single dad) **one of my faves
Dunham - AKA Briefcase (all about the connections)
Marcus - AKA Wallet (big spender)
??? - AKA Clutch (who will this be?)

As you can see Caroline has had a pretty interesting pool of dating candidates and I am going to leave you guessing who she ends up with in the end, or maybe she will continue her dating saga, we shall see!

Grab a bottle of Caroline's favorite wine, Chardonnay, and sit back and enjoy this fun dating tale!

4.0 out of 5 stars Clutch: A Novel 13 November 2015
By Jersey Girl Book Reviews / Jersey Girl Sizzling Book Reviews - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
Clutch: A Novel is an entertaining chick lit story that will keep you in stitches! Author Lisa Becker weaves a sassy fun tale that follows handbag designer Caroline Johnson's romantic trials and tribulations that she encounters during her journey in search of the perfect Mr. Right.

The reader can't help but follow Caroline as her dating life becomes a crazy roller coaster ride wrought with misadventures and date disasters that provides a lot of laugh-out-loud moments. She compares the men she dates to the various handbags that she creates. From the hobo bag - starving artist, the briefcase - businessman, the diaper bag - single dad, and the doctor bag - the professional, to name a few ... it's all about finding the clutch - the perfect man that she can hold onto.

And if that isn't enough, add in Caroline's relationship with best guy friend, bar owner Mike Barnsworth, who is by her side throughout her journey, each supporting the other as they go through the dreaded dating process, only to find out that the perfect person has been right in front of them the whole time!

Clutch: A Novel was such a fun and lighthearted story, it easily kept me engaged and entertained as Caroline and Mike's opposite approach to dating is full of dramatic and hilarious twist and turns. I really enjoyed following Caroline and Mike, they had such an awesome friendship bond, their witty banter and crazy antics kept me snickering as I turned the pages. I thought that the author's comparison of the variety of handbags to the male relationship types was fascinating, it made me wonder how many of us readers paused to compare our own handbags to the different men that we have dated ... hmmm ... very clever!

If you are looking for a delightful chick lit tale that has an enjoyable mixture of humor and romance, then look no further, Clutch: A Novel is the book for you!

Disclaimer: I received a copy of the book from the author in exchange for my honest review.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Love Story perfect for those women in love with Bags and have more Handbags than Shoes in their closets 9 November 2015
By Paula L. Phillips - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
Often in life , we have that one person or thing that will inspire us to believe that we can do whatever we want no matter what happens . For Southerner Caroline Johnson, it was her Aunt when she first gave Caroline her first ever handbag. This inspired Caroline to become one of the world's best handbag designers , over the years we watch as Caroline works her way up to getting into Harvard Business School where she meets Mike. Though Mike is wealthy , he dreams of stepping away from the family mould and opening up/ running his own bar in LA. Mike and Caroline become best buddies and they always vow never to sleep together as it will ruin their friendship, but one night as always happens in college - the two sleep together and wham bam, it's over and they don't discuss it but remain good friends as the pair move to LA together and do their thing. Years later, Caroline and Mike are still the best of buddies but they are both single and dating various people. For Mike, he seems to sleep with everyone in this book and doesn't seem like the settling down type . Caroline is starting to do the female thing and worry whether she will be alone for the rest of her life and never have someone to love, and start a family with. Clutch follows her disastrous dating life where she classifies the men as handbags depending on their personalities. Can Caroline find a Mr Right - the perfect handbag or is he standing right in front of her and she never realised -since she had always been looking for the pretty, shiny and sparkly "impulsive" pick me bags ?

A Love Story perfect for those women in love with Bags and have more Handbags than Shoes in their closets.

Clutch by Lisa Becker is the perfect chicklit read for Women aged 30-40+

5.0 out of 5 stars Baroness Book Trove's Review of Clutch: A Novel by Lisa Becker 1 November 2015
By Amazon Customer - Published on
I have got to say is that the Clutch a novel by Lisa Becker is totally a book that any woman would love to stay in for the night to read and live through Caroline. This book is a really great one and something that I would love to read again. I loved how each chapter was dedicated to a purse while also reflecting the man that Caroline was going to meet in that chapter.

I loved seeing how Mike and Caroline’s friendship went through all that it did while still keeping their friendship a friendship despite the flirting that sometimes happened. I really do love Caroline’s aunt Mimi. She is such a hoot and someone that I would love to have as an aunt. I mean every girl needs a ton of handbags.

Caroline is such an interesting character and not someone that is like the girl-next-door. She also is this smart woman despite letting people walk all over her. Mike is completely different compared to Caroline, not just that he is a male. He just oozes the playboy attitude and lifestyle. Granted he gave that life up to start up his bar and he also is a good person. Sure he flirts with every woman that he meets except he has a good heart that wants to try and help Caroline out, be it with her insecurities or her current relationship at the time.

This is a total chick lit but one that is so funny while also being romantic. I am giving this book five butterflies as the book is that good and completely something that I would recommend to my friends and family.

Anyways until next time enjoy this book review brought to you by

Baroness’ Book Trove.
