Sounds about right, remember some space is used by the operating system, and any preloaded content like dictionary’s, guides, etc.

I am not sure about text file but defintely pdf. You may send the file to the given kindle email id which you may find in settings. Then you have to login to your kindle account and click on deliver to your kindle device then download in kindle once it appeared. Search in google you may get step by step instructions. 8GB is plenty if storing only books, because if one reads one book each week, that is about 2,000 books over 40 years.
However, if a massive reader and/or wanting to store PDFs go 32GB.
Another thing, which I am not certain of, is bigger GB means more space and probably faster operation, and probably longer battery … see more
