the screen stays on. I've left mine on for days at a time. 50 decibels is a tiny amount of sound. About the sound of a whisper. It's fine to mute or not pass on those sounds. If your monitor made sounds all the time you'd learn to filter it out.

Camera must be plugged in and is VOX (sound) activated (I have the 3.2 inch with standard camera).

Answer:
You can set a high or low temperature alarm using the menu system on the parent unit. Use the 'OK'/middle button on the right hand side to enter the menu, then use the arrow buttons to find the thermometer icon and press OK then use the arrows and OK buttons to set your desired min/max for the alarm.

You have to hold the on button down for a few seconds. Pressing it quickly will only turn audio on.

I have the 3.2 inch with the standard camera and it absolutely has the VOX activated function. The screen turns on when the camera unit detects sound. You can adjust the sensitivity of the vox setting.
