You need an HDMI port for the device to work, the picture quality will be what your TV can accommodate. As for a USB port, the device uses this connection to power it up, however if your TV don't have a USB port, the device does have an external power adapter you can plug into a power outlet.

You will need an unused HDMI port not a USB port as it's a streaming video device that supplies a video signal via HDMI not a HDD that you can read things from. I don't know if it can automatically select the correct resolution or not but I found this with a web search:

If you do not get a picture try following what it says to do. Make sure you know which HDMI port you plug it into so can make sure you select the correct HDMI port on the TV remote. Based on the article it looks like you can get SD resolutions. Look at you TV manual if you still have it that should tell you exactly what resolutions are supported via your HDMI ports. If you do not have any HDMI ports on your TV (i.e. it's really old) this device will not work with your TV.

Depending on current draw and how much current the fire TV stick draws you may be able to power it from the TV but start by powering it from the supplied power adaptor first. See less
