It is difficult to attach to any can.
It is not only hard to turn the handle, but the handle must be turned opposite of what feels natural.
It shreds labels and leaves shards of the shredded paper in the can’s contents.
It shreds pieces of the actual can and also leaves those shards in the can’s contents.
After you finally get the can fully open (which seems to take an exceptionally long time), it is difficult to remove the “lid” of the can from the can opener, so you always end up with dirty hands.
Amazon...you're as guilty as WalMart, Sears and The Bay for selling "high end" brands of things that turn out to be counterfeits or purposely made junk designed to fail quickly.
OH, and with the exception of dog food cans, which means my openers are used ONLY twice a week; for the odd can that doesn't have a pull tab on it's lid. This means I'm either horribly abusive with my openers, or they're just made to fail. I'm going with the latter, as the former always something I avoid doing. I treat my stuff with proper respect.
ANYWAYS....point is, I ended up buying this one HOPING to no longer have to make myself insane trying to find a frakkin' opener that works and is reliable. Well, the Zyliss Lock N' Lift can opener might well be the answer.
Out of the package, it feels decently made. The lock part takes a couple tries to get right, but man, the can is secure when it does. It opens easily (I have severe carpal tunnel, arthritis and nephropathy in my aging hands, this is a must for me). Unlock is easily enough accomplished. It cuts a safe, smooth edge, and your can doesn't fall out of the opener.
My likes about it:
It works, its secure, its easy to use, it wipes clean easily, it makes can lids safe for fingers. It's also really comfortable to hold while opening a can, basically, a well thought out piece of engineering so far as fit and use are concerned.
My worries about it:
The locking mechanism is a touch difficult to engage and disengage, feels clunky and might have issues jamming/breaking down the line. It just doesn't feel like it's made to last.
Obviously, it's too soon to tell if this opener's blade will start failing in six months or so. I'll revisit this if it does and post my findings.
It's not really something I'd recommend putting in the dishwasher, due to the possibility of the handle becoming filled with water due to the lock mechanism.
I'm giving this a 4 star right now. If the sturdiness proves to be part of it's design, I'll upgrade this to a 5 star. If it fails, you can guess what star rating it'll receive.
Thanks for reading.
The colour is nice, the handles feel great and aren't cutting into your hands when holding it.
What I enjoy most is that they lock closed, so you can close it on a can and it is providing consistent pressure throughout the entire cut, meaning you don't have to go back and recut part of the can, and you don't have to hold it closed the entire time...
The magnet doesn't work the best for picking up the lid, but that is to be expected as most food cans (I've encountered) are not very magnetic.
After a month of use, it's already loose to grip the can and skipping as you turn the crank. Do yourself a favour, buy the same can opener your grandmother still uses, it will save you time, money and recycling plastic can openers.
I would give the the can opener a 5/5.
The magnetic lift gets a 0/5 from me.
