We are new to the world of reptiles. We've never owned a pet that doesn't have fur :) Warning, if you're new to reptiles… There is a lot to learn. I've learned a lot from reading the reviews of different products on Amazon which also led me to different blogs. So here's my two cents… For what it's worth. We purchased the zoo med bearded dragon complete habitat. It comes with the dual dome lights which includes a UVA/UVB coiled bulb. I read a lot of feedback that this included bulb is not the proper bulb for a bearded dragon and you may end up with metabolic bone disease (among other things). Slightly frustrating since it is a bearded dragon habitat but that's another subject... trust me when I say I had spent enough on his habitat and everything we needed to get started, including the dragon :) I really did not want to spend another $50 (or more - everywhere except Amazon) on a hooded light fixture that does not include the bulb (what?!?) and approximately $30 for a T5 10.0 high output 39 watt 34 inch bulb!! However, after reading different blogs and feeling like his lighting was not adequate, (and, even though I am not a reptile person,I had instantly become attached to the little fella) and did not want him to get sick. ("Frank" is my daughter's lizard. I let her talk me into getting him for her but I swear I think I spend more time with him!! Warning parents... Even if you're not a reptile person, these baby beardies have a way of working straight into your heart!)
I didn't want the little guy getting sick and I knew I would end up spending well over $80 to go to a veterinarian and then have to turn around and spend another $80 on the light fixture in the bulb! So I searched and searched. Trust me, I was looking to save some money. You won't find this fixture cheaper anywhere else.
We have the 40 gallon bearded dragon zoo med habitat so I bought the 36 inch hooded late fixture in the 34 inch bulb. I thought I would be able to set the hooded fixture on top of the screen. After I received the item and read the box, I saw that even fine mesh screens can block up to 50% of the UVA/UVB light. Ugh! I got a little frustrated at first and thought maybe I should've bought a smaller fixture. But then I would've had to figure out a way to mount it inside the tank. Ultimately, I am glad we got the 36 inch fixture. We have two sliding screens on the top of his cage so I sent the fixture in between the screens. Since we only use this light during the day, at night I can push the screens together, but during the day I do have to pull the front screen out a little so it does not block the light. (see attached pictures). I feel like the larger light fixture gives him plenty of light coverage and it balances well on top of the tank.
If you are new to bearded dragons, there is a lot to learn, but they are great pets. There is a lot to learn from reading the different product reviews on Amazon. I hope this one helps!
