I have to say that I am now an avid reader of zombie fiction. I used to read mainstream thrillers such as Ludlems Bourne but foud them a bit too deep. My interest started I think with the excellent World War Z and has progressed through to Mark Tufo's truely brilliant Fallout series but with a lot of dross in between. I don't know what I was expecting when I down loaded the three books available at present but all three books were only a fiver and I had a set of night shifts coming up.
The only reader reviews were from the US Amazon site and it was on the basis of those short statements that I took the plunge.
What I got was completely and pleasently unexpected.
The story starts in Peru with a meteor/satalite thingy plunging to Earth and releasing poison which goes on to infect the local population and the rescue team sent in to assess the situation and clean up, which in turn spreads pretty much world wide. Sorry, I know that sounds a bit vague but I don't want to include any spoilers as the three books are a real treat. I would say that it is worth downloading all three books together as they appear to be a little short for individual works (or it might just be they were so good that I flew through them).
Character wise, you have a bit of everything here from Jack, who is the special forces soldier who doesn't appear to be that special in all honesty and it might have been more realistic if he had been from the plain old infantry. One of the things that usually put me off books is the inclusion of the SF soldier as if ordinary troops are mindless automatons who just follow orders and can't think for themselves but this fella I suppose, wouldn't have found himself in this situation had he not have been a bit special!
Next we have the CDC Director who relentlessly persues a cure for the zombie plague with the support of his wife and the wife of the spec warrior, who meet by chance in a plague infested petrol station and head North to stay with a a friend of Jack's in his fortress like home. Garrick is a rich former soldier turned survivalist who has been waiting for the Apocolypse and is well prepared for it. If I had the money I'd be just like him! It seems that the only people who know what to do are the zombie movie/fiction fans which I guess is a bit typical of all this type of fiction. "You gotta shoot em in the head" rings true here as well.
There are other characters with their own stories which help to give scale to the size of the catastophy and these are great in themeselves and completely believable in the way their curcumstances develop, of note is the nuclear submarine commander and the police patrol officer looking for the bus of school kids.
All in all a great read and a I can't wait for the fourth and fith books to come out.
This is a rough outline I know but if your like me & you enjoy a story with pace, gore and tons of action but not so much depth that it leaves lots to the imagination then this is for you. More please!
