3.0 out of 5 stars Different, but enjoyable! 7 September 2013

This was an oddly intriguing read, I don’t even know how to rate it. It definitely had a premise I hadn’t encountered often before in YA - teenage world-class assassins. A lot of shooting, killing, betrayal, love and mountain-fulls of angsty angst. Come to think of it, this book isn’t really for people under 17 with all the blood and sexy times, but at the same time this wasn’t a topic heavy, dark or depressing read either, which I can appreciate.

Basic gist: Anna, the tough, talented and gorgeous assassin is sent to take out Gabriel’s, the sexy, spoiled and confident hunk’s, father, who’s a big shot criminal. What happens happens, and Gabriel and Anna fall in love with lots of emotional turmoil following, since Anna is good at her job and does the deed despite her involvement with the mob’s son. One chases the other thought the wide world and a big tug war beings with once Gabriel being cold and murderous towards Anna and then the other way around. Their relationship has a lot of issues I think should be addressed to a shrink. Nevertheless, love is love and those two are crazy for each (there are some adorable scenes which I really enjoyed).

The humor at times was genius, totally made me chuckle. The banter between the main couple and Jackson (one of my favorite characters, a sexy dork) and the fourth, who I’m not going to mention here, was hilarious, snarky, teasing and exactly to the embarrassing “pain” points. The dialogue in general was decent too, but there was a considerable emphasis on description and Anna and Gabriel’s (whose points of view the book consisted of, them taking turns) thoughts, views and emotions.

What I wasn’t really fond of was the constant talk of intense, passionate and soul mate kind of love between Anna and Gabriel. They were so messed up and, thus, I completely understand their need to, when finding someone who invokes such deep feelings, to hold on to it, but as they were not entirely sane to begin with, then in conclusion, their romance was just as a crazy and all-consuming. Still, the high amount of “I love you”, “don’t love you”, “can’t help but love you”, etc was simply too much for me to take seriously since we were talking about teenagers, however grownup or experienced in the cruel real world. Also, since love and hate is the same emotion one the opposite sides of one coin (allegedly) then this couple also switched back and forth and it became slightly tiring.

Anna – I liked her, her lifestyle was of course out of this world, but she was still and teenage girl, who experienced her first love, which had quite devastating consequences. Despite her job and cold/tough exterior, Anna was a sympathetic girl, wacky and messed up, but sympathetic.

Gabriel – He came across as this playboy and arrogant douche at first glance, but was a total softie inside. He was sweet and loving with Anna, unfortunately, their relationship was very volatile and doomed from the start, but that didn’t mean they didn’t try to make it work. The way they hurt each other was thoughtless and brutal, but it went with their reality. All in all, I liked Gabriel, he was determined and didn’t let anything deter him to make Anna his.

I still don’t really know how to rate this. The enjoyment factor was high and it was a gripping read, but many aspects were overdone or so painfully far away from reality for me to take it seriously. I’m between 3 and 4 stars, but in the end I think I’ll give it a 3 and expect better from the next book (which I understand should be still coming?).

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!!!!!!! 13 February 2014

I love this book because the girl is the defender, weapons specialized, race car driver type deal. I love it when it's the woman who is scarier than the man. I loved how it was the female keeping secrets as an assassin and secretly falling in love instead of the typical situation where the male is in that position. This book was very suspenseful and had a lot of foreshadowing, and yeah it was dramatic but in one of the best ways possible. The author focused on the moral/problem that makes the story worth the time and money, she focused on a serious situation where feelings only cause problems and get in the way, but those feelings are inevitable. Being an assassin hired to take out the bad people in the world is dangerous but falling in love only makes it worse. When Annabelle uses the son, (Gabriel Sanchez) to gain access to the target's (Xavier Sanchez) house, she figures this will be like the typical get in, make the kill, get out job but that plan seems far fetched when she starts falling for him. She tries to keep her head straight but she can't seem to get around the feelings between her and Gabriel. One tragic night can change everything...
Gabriel has found the one girl who is everything he's ever wanted, and he's falling head over heels for Anna (Annabelle) the new girl, who is as mysterious as she is beautiful. One night will change his life forever. Once seeking Anna's undivided love, now that is no longer his top priority, or that's what he continues to tell himself. Now he seeks vengeance, an eye for an eye, a life for a life. When he finds her he's conflicted by the emotions in his head: kill her or keep her.
After Gabriel catches up to Anna, she knows she has to stay strong and not follow her heart, after all romantic love is dangerous for an assassin. Plus, Anna knows what they had was gone that night and they can never have it again.
What's to come in this dangerous tale of an assassin in love? What happened that horrific night? Will Anna ever be able to find love or is it to risky? Will Gabriel be able to realize things are not always what they seem before it's too late? If you want the answer to these questions and more, just read the book already! I guarantee you'll love it!

This was such a fun, fast-paced, entertaining read! There was constant drama and I loved every second of it! Once the beautiful Anna crashed into the spoiled, womanizing Gabriel Sanchez's life, it was NEVER the same. Their romance was turbulent and filled with love, betrayal, remorse, guilt, hatred, hope, despair--you name it, these two felt it--but it was so intensely passionate that neither one could stay away from the other. 'Young Love Murder' is a page-turner that you will not want to put down.

This book from start to finish is meant to be over the top. Annabelle and her brother Jackson have for a long time been trained as assassins, the family business. I found that Annabelle was likeable enough and her brother was the necessary comic relief throughout, but overall the book lacks the umph! that should come from a tale about a brother and sister assassin team.

Annabelle is assigned a `target' and quickly inserts herself into the life of said target. While she is in Florida, she of course, falls for the targets hot son, Gabriel. And let me just say, Gabriel is not a womanizer (like many reviews have said) but a typical teenage boy in my book. Gabriel finds women to be expendable and used for a good time, but he meets his match in Annabelle, who does not fall for him at first sight but decides to play the game and win him over so he is falling over himself for her. I liked the building of their relationship and it is no doubt the center of the book.

Love and murder is something that does not go hand and hand and it is flushed out well in this book- if not a little too much. While the entire premise of the book is fiction, I found that even certain things happened that were just borderline ridiculous. I will not give anything away, but once it had to do with weapons and once with the relationship between Gabriel and Annabelle. The traveling, the fighting, the abilities, I get that but a few things that I would consider part of the glue to the story were not done well and left me kinds like what the?!

Overall, it was a fast read about romance between two people from very different worlds. I need more reality and a little less of the outrageous.

I found the minor characters enjoyable and I look forward to reading Jackson's tale, because I want to see him get his.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Nice Debut Novel! 18 February 2012

A really enjoyed Young Love Murder: Book 1 in the Young Assassins series by April Brookshire. But, there were a few things that, if altered, would have elevated my review from 4 to 5 stars.

First, I felt that the author spent too much time detailing the more mundane aspects of the characters lives (i.e. I walked into the room....the room was I removed my jacket...then I sat on the bed....etc, etc) This resulted in the novel being way longer than necessary. I also felt like some pivotal event was always looming on the horizon, since there's no way the author would waste time going into such detail about things like taking a shower and eating breakfast. But, there were really only a couple of climactic events in the story that satisfied my anticipation.

Second, the stubborness in both Gabriel and Annabelle was at once endearing and completely frustrating! Perhaps it would have been better if it wasn't so drawn out? I'm sure this was meant to be appealing to readers since most people can relate to these experiences and the conflicting emotions involved. But, the fact that they were so obviously in love with each other but kept denying their feelings and keeping the truth from each other was maddening! And this behavior spanned over the course of three years! Seriously? I wanted to reach into my Kindle and smack them both!

Overall, it was a great book. The characters were well developed and multi-faceted, and the plot was creative and interesting. The Epilogue indicates that Book 2 (scheduled to be released Winter 2011/2012) will be centered around Jackson, which I'm looking forward to. I love his character and am interested to learn more about him. I would recommend this novel to patient readers.
