A very unbelievable storyline written in the style of a talented twelfth grader. Possibly might suit an adolescent reader. I kept reading thinking that it had to improve. It didn't and I feel angry that I wasted 2 hours reading the first half before stopping.

An unusual lawyer straight out of law school virtually coerced into a very unusual first job. Full of secret agents, spies, twists and turns made this a very enjoyable read. Keep them coming, John!

This is a must for readers who enjoy courtroom dramas. The difficulties encountered by a young, new to the job, lawyer, give the handling of his first case an extra zing. Can't wait to read this author's next book.

Wow! trust and betrayal shown to me, where I would never thought to look! The action never stopped, always making me think, the writer certainly had my nerves tumbling and I enjoyed this immensely! Certainly recommend this to everyone!

Really enjoyed reading this novel. The language was light which made the book easy to read. Once I'd started, it was hard to put it down. The story line was very well paced.

... although I had already read this book I was pleased to be given the opportunity by the author
Reviewed in Australia on 13 October 2017
I have been a fan of John Ellsworth for some time and although I had already read this book I was pleased to be given the opportunity by the author, to read and review this, the first book in the Thaddeus Murfee series.
Thaddeus is finishing law school. He is in debt and has only $200 left of his student loan. He must find a job or face eviction. Then unexpectedly he is approached by a couple of Government agents and offered a job. The job isn’t advertised and as Thaddeus finds out once he has accepted the job, there is also no job description.
However, he accepts and is immediately offered a starting salary in excess of 6 figures. He is delighted until he finds that he has been recruited and employed as a spy and the person he is to spy on is his boss, the US District Attorney. And Thaddeus likes his boss and he particularly likes the boss’s daughter.
We follow Thaddeus through the intrigue, spying with foreign government agents, a boss who is accused of spying, and US government officials who will stop at nothing in their attempts to condemn the US District Attorney as a traitor, a charge that can carry the death penalty.
Thaddeus does not play by their rules and is fired but then comes to the aid of his ex-boss.
A great read and having read it so long ago, I was pleased to reread it. I strongly recommend this book and those others I have read in this series.

Thaddeus starts his courtroom career - with a murder
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 June 2016Verified Purchase
This book is a prequel to a collection of books by the author about this character 'Thaddeus Murfee' to those of you joining the other existing readers, Congratulations on joining on the right book which gives you the benefit of hours of 'Thaddeus' to catch up on. This plot is a huge plot and without giving any spoilers away it shows the naivete of a neophyte to the Washington political scene and the underside of the same beast. For those of us who know Thaddeus, you see his first inklings of the Murfee thought processes which make him who he is today. Virtually consumed in one sitting!

Suspension of belief but enjoyable read

In most exciting books, the reader needs to suspend belief and in this book one suspends belief by the bag load. Despite this, I found the characters engaging and the story made me smile.

This is the second book I have read in the Thaddeus Murfee, thr first being 'Defending Turquoise? which I enjoyed also. Each can be read as a standalone book. In this book I like the way in which Thaddeus wins his case even though the Judge is so against him. It just goes to show that justice wins in the end. He has such a likeable character.

Great Read

Great Read. I haven't read anything by this author before but will definitely look out for others in the series. The characters are all well written and you want to know what happens to them. The plot and sub lots are entirely believable and I found that I couldn't put the book down without finishing it! So unusual for me. This is a definite five star review.
