Like many readers here, I too have read every single book, waiting eagerly each year for my next Raker fix. This one is different. This book focusses more on Raker and his emotions than any other and at times is truly cruel, uncomfortable and painful to read. My emotional responses levels went off the charts for Raker in the two days I took to read it. At times I had to put the book down, completely frustrated, thinking can Tim really be putting this poor man through this? If you have read the entire collection then you, like me will be heavily invested in Raker and what he has been through, and as the story has created such powerful responses in me as the reader, it can only mean that this has left me once more craving the next instalment and believing that You Were Gone is truly up there with Vanished as his best ever. I hope you love this book as much as I have.
We have known from the outset that David’s beloved wife, Derryn, had passed away from cancer some years previously so when a woman walks into a Police station, looking identical to her, claiming to be called Derryn Raker and asking for her husband, David, the Police begin to question whether Derryn had actually died and that this woman is who she says she is. David himself begins to question whether he nursed her through her last days and if the funeral actually took place.
Things are compounded when an eminent psychiatrist confirms to the Police that he treated David some years previously for a rare condition called Capgras delusion. His life then becomes a nightmare, not least because he has to try and prove to the Police that this woman isn’t who she says she is but also he has to prove everything to someone else - himself, as his own sanity is brought into question. He has to try and find out who is doing this and why.
This is a totally brilliant book which ends with one humdinger of a cliffhanger and I cannot wait to see what happens to David next.
