I have been deeply moved and inspired by this book-the authors have lived this life to a ‘T’ As I’m reading, I can see that there are extremely eerie similarities that are yet comforting to hear because of the Great Hope in our Lord and Savior for this family. As scripture tells us ‘theres nothing new under the sun’ and one can truly feel this when reading this book. You Are Not Alone is a real life, real journey, real emotional of a family that has shared mirrored situations and understand the seasons of parenting a troubled child. A game-changer for me! The Lord has used your pen to the paper to write your story to impact His people for His Glory! Thank you for sharing with the world- you have for sure brightened my path to see this for what it really is.
Dena Yohe writes from painful heartfelt experience of her own struggles with her daughter. Addiction, mental health and the coping skills necessary to survive our co-dependency on our hurting kids are only a few of the issues she addresses. Written from a Christian perspective, she enables readers to see what good can be born out of the struggles involved with hard issues. A very honest book with real ideas to help you survive life with a prodigal child. A keeper for my bookshelf.
This book has been extremely helpful to me in my journey as a parent of a child in addiction. I read it, marked it up like crazy, and go back to it frequently. After reading the book, I really did feel like I am not alone, both in the sense that God knows and loves me and my family, and also that I am part of a very large group of parents struggling with the same or similar things. The way Dena wrote is not from a perspective of high above or beyond, but very personal and it feels like she is next to the reader. Interspersed are sections written by Dena's daughter, which are great in giving help from a different vantage point. I highly recommend this book.
Dena Yohe's book "You Are Not Alone" was a balm to my heart and mind as I walked/am walking with my child and family through a painful and unknown for how long season of mental health challenges, addiction, self harm, eating disorder, and assault. Her Christian perspective and encouragement to lean hard into God to learn how to trust Him and His perfect plan and timing not only for my child, but also for me, has brought me a sense of peace that I could never find on my own. Knowing that I am not alone in this walk has been a gift from God. I highly encourage any parent who is hurting to read this book! It's been a blessing for me!
Dena expresses the wrenching pain and desperation of a parent as only one who has experienced it first hand can do. She offers permission to feel the hurt deeply, but at the same time she gently encourages fellow sufferers to hang in there and seek support from others. No pithy formulas for fixing your prodigal, but lots of encouragement to take care of yourself. Most importantly she encouraged the reader to lean into God and trust Him even when you may feel he's abandoned you. I recommend this book to all parents suffering from seeing their children's lives being destroyed from destructive behaviors.
Very helpful. As a parent of a troubled-young adult, I feel her pain. Her honesty was refreshing. The chapters on Fear and Worry, Disappointment and Forgiveness and exhaustion were all especially helpful. This is an important book for a growing part of our society.
Dena reveals the pain every mother feels when she sees her child broken and struggling. She also reveals a hope that never gives up no matter how desperate the situation becomes. She inspires the reader to keep believing in the child and to know that with the Lord’s help, all things are possible.
If you have a teenager or young adult child who is making destructive decisions such as to use drugs, self harm, etc., this book will definitely help you! I read the whole book in just a few days, and now I am going back and rereading chapters again that deal with things I am going through right now. This is written by a lady who has been through the same struggles and emotions I am going through now, and it has been extremely helpful. I highly recommend this book!
