Product Description

In 1842, Deidre Scott leaves the Orkney Islands in Scotland to follow Mac McDonnell, the man she loves, a fisherman sentenced to a seven year sentence for resisting evictions. Their ship runs aground just as they reach the dreaded penal colony in Van Diemen’s Land (present day Tasmania).

As Mac toils on a road gang, Deidre cobbles together a job. Befriended by Lady Franklin, the wife of world-famous explorer, Sir John Franklin, Deidre finds a way to reassign Mac to Doc Morrell in Hobart Town. But Doc cannot help him once Mac fights with Constable Johnson. Mac must find a way to survive the prison at Port Arthur. Can Deidre and Mac build a new life for themselves in this rough and tumble penal colony?

Years of Stone was a Quarter finalist in 2014’s Amazon’s Breakthrough Novel Award (ABNA) competition. ABNA reviewers commented Years of Stone “grips from the beginning,” and is “not to be missed.”

5.0 out of 5 stars What a wonderful sequel to Standing Stones 29 November 2014

What a wonderful sequel to Standing Stones. Ms. Camp's exhaustive research into the conditions of mid 19th century conditions on the prison isle of Tasmania brings this novel to life. From the opening ship wreck where Deidre has followed her fiance, Mac, who will serve a seven year sentence for nothing more than civil disobedience. Deidre will suffer through the depressing conditions of the early settlement while Mac suffers through the torturous treatment as a prisoner. Ms. Camp weaves a love story (with all the mushy parts left out) and allows the reader to fill in the blanks (which we are good at). A good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Years of Stone: Book 2 (also book 1) The McDonnell Clan 21 January 2015

I love tales of Scotland and her people, I also love history. Both of these books although fiction are inter woven with the real people and happenings of the time.
I knew of the transportation to Australia but not Tasmania which made them interesting. The journey by schooner in book 1, the mishaps, the living conditions of both passengers and prisoners was beyond my imagination.
Highly recommend both books.

Our book club read two of the McDonnell Clan books and look forward to the third where the author focuses on other members of the family who migrated to the great northwest! Beth has been a guest speaker for us. A chance to hear from the author is great because we hear about the process of weaving historical events into an engaging family saga. Keep on writing Beth...we are anxiously awaiting book III !

5.0 out of 5 stars MUST READ 19 July 2014

The continuing story of Mac and Deirdre's experiences as they struggle to find a life together amid overwhelming obstacles, is a "can't put it down" treat. The book flows smoothly as they each work to make it through each day.
I would recommend reading Standing Stones first, in order to get background, but I can see that this book could be good all by itself.

I really enjoyed reading the second book of this series. Well written, interesting, with good deal of history in there. Would recommend it to anyone who likes some historical fiction. Was good enough that I bought it instead of waiting for it to be in the lending library.
