Sue Grafton's latest novel X is another winner for devoted Kinsey Millhone fans. Having read all the books in the Alphabet series, I wait patiently for the next book to see what adventures come Kinsey's way. I adore all the characters she interacts with as they seem so real. We avid readers from "Down Under" in Oz are great followers of Sue.

The minute this book was available, I bought it, however, I took my time starting it because, as always, I knew I'd be hard pressed to want to do anything else once I started reading it. Sue Grafton delivers again. The only thing I missed in this novel was Kinsey not purchasing her regular quarter pound from McDonalds, at least once, though there is mention of another unbranded takeaway in the book at one point, but it's not the same! Funny what you look forward to each time you revisit old 'literary' friends. Thank you for another pleasant interlude in my life reading this latest in the alphabet series of novels.

Excellent and intriguing. I loved all the trails that Kinsey followed to solve this one. Very enjoyable.

Enjoyable mystery from the great Sue Grafton. Must read this if you are a fan of the series. For some reason the usual black dress and QP don't make an appearance in this book, which was a little disappointing. Not the best book of the series but still worth reading as always.

Another wonderfully crafted tale from Sue Grafton. By this stop in the alphabet, you feel like you've heard the latest from family or a longtime friend.

Enjoyable - usually can read this series in a day or two. This book took much longer. Appeared to get to the "normal" standard by about 75% though.
Still recommend, will still read other books in the series (as soon as they come out), but no as good as previous.

Still Superb

Well....after just finishing this, I am at a loss as to why so many reviewers have slated it !! I really enjoyed it. I have encountered the odd dud in this set of stories (namely U and V) but didn't find this fell into that category in the least. I have been holding off reading this one and the Y book as I know they're the last, and I've been acquainted with Kinsey and Henry and Dietz and Cheney a lot of years now and don't wish to part company anytime soon....it'll be a little like a bereavement, so I'm dreading it. Plus, Ms Grafton won't have let our Kinsey head off into the sunset with any satisfactory finality since she sadly didn't live to complete book Z......
I liked that she took it upon herself to finish up Pete's last case for him and Ruthie. They weren't the best of pals, of course, but she's always been a very decent human being and I'd have expected nothing less from her. I did wonder why so much of the case referred to this Ned being involved, yet she never got around to going after him in any direct fashion. I found that quite unlike her, and wasn't really sure why this was the case. I didn't like Edna or Joseph but really warmed to Taryn regarding characters in this story. Teddy was interesting as well.
Something I found fascinating, yet I'm unsure if they do it here, is that the traffic wardens there carry a piece of chalk and mark tyres !! I had no idea, and I've often wondered how they know if a car was in the same spot for longer than an hour....
There were a couple of properly laugh-out-loud instances and also a couple of times I was sniffy, one being her postscript in this ending.....so......now I just have Y to go and I'm going to hang onto that till next year, I think !!

Respectfully submitted, but...

I couldn't understand why my attention kept wandering during reading this. The Kinsey Millhone series is 'comfort reading' for me, but this just never gripped from start to finish, whereas the others do, even if mildly absurd at times. KM is a brilliant creation, complete with sartorial insouciance, scruffy hair and the inevitable clean underpants in her handbag, funny and feisty; the rest of the regulars just as good, but in 'X' everything sags. (No, not the underpants!) At one point I caught myself longing to skip several pages ahead to the action - would she stay overnight in the town where she was investigating or would Henry get his fresh asparagus on time?
Henry her landlord didn't seem himself either.
The most gripping storyline was the saga of the new neighbours (won't spoil.)
I couldn't not buy or read this but hope Y and Z revert to standard.

A-Z murders

I have read all the others and notice a general trend from A-X. the actual cases get smaller and the minutia of thhe descriptions of everyone she meets get longer and longer. The cases are interesting but I needed to skim through the descriptions of the many characters and their home furnishing to avoid boredom.

Another fast paced page turner

I've followed the alphabet books by Sue Grafton featuring Kinsey for over 20 years now, and every one of them never fails to deliver.
Reading Kinsey's journey through life, with her sassy repartee, her lavishly salted warm boiled egg sandwiches, her on / off again relationship with another Pi is complete retro escapism.
Sue manages to craft Kinsey into the woman most women thought they may be if there were no children in tow, and a firmer fitness regime!
This particular installment rattles along at a fair old pace, managing to pack more than one beautifully convoluted tale into the whole and is just as unputdownable as the others.
A thoroughly enjoyable read.
Well done Ms Grafton.

A Good Read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 August 2019Verified Purchase
Although I doubt if (m)any people like Kinsey Millhone exist in real life, Sue Grafton identifies very much with her, and as a result Kinsey comes across as quite genuine. And the book keeps up the author's usual high standards, intelligently written and keeping the reader guessing. It has a few too many diversions which lead to it being rather long, but it remains enjoyable and in its way relaxing.
