Who needs a holiday when your destiny is Written in the Stars?

About the Author

Lily Velden lives on the east coast of Australia, her family having emigrated from Holland when she was a child.

She’s both a left and right brain person, holding qualifications in both Finance and Fine Arts. She tells her friends that her way with numbers will make her a profitable artist and writer… one day.

Lily has always had a love of language and a beautifully crafted sentence, and admits to having a fetish for collecting quotes, poems, and song lyrics. What she won’t admit to is how many notebooks she’s filled with those quotes… Her fascination carries on into her artworks where she often incorporates text. When a shoulder injury slowed down her art practice she decided to explore her love of the written word more fully and began writing. “I’ll paint my pictures with words.”

Not that she’s abandoned artmaking in its entirety—Lily collaborates on the designs for all her book covers.

There are many things Lily loves, here are just a few of the PG rated ones: a good laugh (all the better if caused by a naughty joke), the smell of freshly baked goods and mown grass, a smile from a stranger, rainbows after the rain, and witnessing a promise kept.

In this we meet Sebastian, who ends up on a dating show called “Written In The Stars”, courtesy of his best friend and flatmate Declan.

Pot Of Gold 9halfDeclan works in the hair-and-makeup department of the matchmaking show. From here he suggests to them that the Valentine Show should be special, and rather than just the normal guy girl contestants, it should also include a girl girl segment and also two guys. Somehow he manages to persuade Sebastian to enter the show, and proceeds to coach him on questions, and also change his wardrobe so he dresses better, and also made him go the gym every day!!

Things don’t go according to plan when he is finally on the show…… and I have to admit that I was laughing so much while reading this….. you could just really imagine all of this happening in real life.

If you want a feel good story, then please read this, you will not regret it.

4.0 out of 5 stars My Rating: 4 of 4 Stars (Based on Short&Light Read Category) 14 November 2014

Sebastian Robson, I guess, had been a little bit coerced into joining a televised dating game called Written in the Stars. His best friend, Declan, primped him, coached him, practically did a makeover so he would have a chance to win a date with a handsome prize. However, after all that was said and done, Sebastian lack of filter leaked through, much to Declan's misery but to the delight of the potential date.

This is a very, very short read but within a few minutes of fast reading, snorting in laughter was unexpected. This is a true comedy of errors that ends happily for Sebastian. It's 26 pages of fun and laughter that shows being honest may just be the best way to go if one looks for a happily ever after.

Highly recommended short and light read.

Written is the Stars by Lily Velden is a sweet and refreshingly funny short about being yourself and maybe finding love. This isn’t an insta-love story. It isn’t about two perfect individuals who are perfect for each other. The on main character isn’t the yin to the other MC’s yang. It is a story of one man who can’t do anything right, yet still finds himself with the man of his dreams in the end. They shouldn’t fit. Yet, you can’t help rooting for them to find each other in the end.

Granted that end comes pretty quickly, but I respect the hell out of Velden for not trying to make this story more than what it is. We don’t learn deep and meaningful things about either MC. We don’t know where they are coming from or where they are going. We are just along for a quick and fun ride.
5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and absolutely amazing story 16 November 2014

I would like to start off with a warning. Do not, I repeat, do not try to drink anything while reading this short story! While delightful to read, Sebastian and his story will make sure you spit your drink all over the screen of whatever you’re reading this short story on! His thoughts, his interactions with his family, his relationship with his best friend Declan, it’s all so funny and so real, you won’t be able to put this story down.

The matchmaking game show reminds us all of similar programs we’ve watched, but how Sebastian reacts, despite Declan’s heavy training, will make this one to remember. The honesty of the situation, the way Sebastian sees the train wreck as it happens yet seem unable to stop it, it’s all so gloriously entertaining, I just can’t find the words to tell you how much I loved it. So… Just go get your copy, read it, laugh, and get it over with!

The one general complaint I have is that the blurb tells us nothing! That being said, this is a sweet, funny short story (part of the Bollocks! Anthology). Written in the Stars is a dating show. Sebastian’s roommate, Declan, works hair and make up on the show and he’s convinced Sebastian to be a contestant. Normally, it’s a het show but they are doing a special for guy meets guy and Uh oh!

Sebastian is a wonderful character to read. He’s funny, honest and doesn’t try to change himself for anyone. I appreciated that about him. This one made me smile and I wanted to read more of Sebastian!
