Product description

Product Description

You’re a writer. You just read your manuscript and discovered your characters nodding like marionettes in every chapter. When they’re not nodding, they’re rolling their eyes.

Oops.

Time to slash the Pinocchio strings and turn them into real live people. Award-winning author Kathy Steinemann will provide the tools. She cuts through the so-called rules and offers simple solutions.

Too many repetitions of “little”? There’s a cure for that. Do you rely on “very” too often? There’s a cure for that too. You’ll find the remedies in this book’s dispensary.

Should you ever use anything other than “said” to attribute dialogue? Are exclamation points taboo? The answers might surprise you.

Learn how to harness body language, cut hackneyed adjectives, and draw on the environment for ambience. No more wooden characters. You’ll transform them into believable personalities your readers will learn to love. Or hate.

Get in the driver’s seat, relax, and enjoy your journey—with Kathy Steinemann’s book as your GPS.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great source of alternative word choices 24 March 2017
By David T. Allen - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
This is a great source for any author who finds themselves overusing words. Here's just a few samples you'll find inside:

Walter brought his daughter to the picnic. > Walter piggybacked his daughter to the picnic.

Tasha's eyes looked beautiful in the starlight. > The ethereal radiance of the stars couldn't match the allure of Tasha's eyes.

Not only are these edits more interesting to read, they also evoke emotion. The first example shows a fun interaction, while the second strongly implies the narrator is attracted to Tasha.

I look forward to applying these examples to my next round of edits.

5.0 out of 5 stars Our Modern Day Yoda 24 March 2017
By Kindle Customer - Published on Amazon.com

This Author is AMAZING! Not only does she keep whipping out helpful, inciteful and fabulous books but it's apparent that she truly cares about her readers which is a rarity in these times. Kathy Steinemann is my go to authority on anything about writing. She is my my guide, my inspiration and my Yoda. The forces are DEFINITELY with her. :-)
4.0 out of 5 stars A good reference book 19 May 2017
By Diane Steward - Published on Amazon.com

I am still in the process of going through this book. Although it is mostly like a glorified thesaurus, it does zero in on specific problematic and overused words/phrases.

As soon as I opened it I knew I’d made a good purchase. It has a layout that makes it easy to find what you’re looking for and inventive examples on how to use the long lists of better word choices listed within.
5.0 out of 5 stars Useful. Glad I bought it. 8 April 2017

I bought the book yesterday and put it to use right away. What was helpful is that it not only gave a list of useful words, it also gave me ideas so brainstorm about.
