I order two or three books each week from Amazon. I came across this one after finding it on a CEO's favorite book list. Normally I do NOT review books because I have ordered so many books that it would take such a long time and take away from my limited reading time. After finishing this book I instantly put it down, got on my phone, and came to this very page. I want to leave a review that hopefully helps someone who is on the fence about this book.
One of my biggest gripes is how repetitive it is. This book is 600+ pages long. At a certain point I would read a section only to recall reading the same thing, just worded differently, 100 pages ago. Mr. Friedman wants American's and students to be creative and multidimensional but I felt as if I was being spoon fed most of the book. I'm only 22 and I could interrupt the message in a lot less pages then this.
Also the book is outdated. No mention of Amazon, Facebook, YouTube, or any social media platform. When this book was written MySpace was big but there is no mention of it either. For someone who wants to repeat that the world is flat he missed the ball when it came to predicting such things as social media taking over our lives to where we can connect with anyone instantly, wherever we go.
Just because I was complaining above does not mean this book isn't good. It is a good book. Mr. Friedman took a lot of time and put a lot of effort into this book. I applaud him for that. I learned quite a bit about some companies I thought I knew really well like UPS. Some parts were good enough for me to stop and highlight a section because it was communicated nicely and it made me ask myself questions regarding the text. I probably won't re-read this book but I do have some great notes to pull from it.
If you have free time, get this book.
If you have limited time to read a book this long, put it off. After page 400 I wasn't as interested as when I first started.
