Hard Hats: Book One

Aaron Costa’s summer was all planned. Despite having to remodel the family lake house, it would be a vacation of sorts, and he had every intention of enjoying it—until the friend who was supposed to help him got injured and left him in a lurch. He decides to take the opportunity to bond with his son and hires Julian and his roommate, Malachi, to assist.

As a broke college student, Malachi could use the money, and spending the summer with Aaron for eye candy sounds like a dream. "Look but don’t touch" becomes his motto. But when Julian starts flaking on his responsibilities and Malachi and Aaron are forced to spend long hours alone together, their mutual attraction is impossible to resist.

Aaron can’t fight the temptation sexy Malachi presents. But more than their age difference stands in their way, not the least of which is Aaron’s semi-closeted status and the fact that he’s never openly discussed his sexuality with his son. He has no idea how Julian will react when he learns his father is not only gay, he’s also dating his best friend.

I'm gonna fangirl here, I LOOOOOVE this book. Piper Vaughn is one of my few auto-buys, and this one didn't disappoint. The authors deliver a fantastic tale with great emotions, smokin' hot nookie, and the mother of all embarrassing scenes. OMG, I cringed in sympathy, my face red hot as I read it. Aaron and Malachi are an absolutely wonderful couple to read about. There was fun and feisty, sweet and smexy, and heart tugs galore. I highly recommend this book. I've read it three times already. And I hear a sequel is in the works! Woot! Yes, please. Gimme mooooaar!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good book and <3 the narrator :) ***3.5 stars*** 23 April 2016

Just to let you all know I purchased the eBook/Audio version. I really enjoy reading/listening (yes when not driving or doing laundry I listen to the it while following along in the book as well) to this book. I ended up purchasing it due to Paul Morey being the narrator (he is in my top five) and decided to give it a go. There were parts in the book where Julian pushed my buttons (how he acted towards his father and how self centered he was). I absolutely loved Malachi and his family in this book. I was glad that it didn't really bring in the drama of the past love/neighbor since all my frustration was centered on Aaron's son. Overall, this is a well written book and definitely will be reading more of Kade Bohme's books.

5.0 out of 5 stars They Murdered It! (in the best way!) 29 April 2014

Oh My God! Piper and Kade KILLED it with this book! Aaron Costa has plans to renovate his parents lake house in order to sell it, and when his best friend gets hurt and has to back out, he invites his son to help, who brings his best friend.

What Aaron wasn't planning on was being completely and utterly taken with Malachi, who is the same age as his son, Julian. Malachi feels the same way though and as the weeks progress, Julian's behavior gets worse and worse. He's acting out in ways that Aaron has never seen before, slacking on the job and Aaron doesn't know what to do.

In the meantime, the tension between Malachi and Aaron explodes and they take things to the next level. There is a scene in here that is so freakin hot I can't even begin to tell you how good it was.

Of course things blow up but how it's handled is extremely well done. I really, really loved this book. I've always been a fan of age gap stories, especially ones that involve friends of their children and there's something about this one that takes it pretty high up on that list! My heart physically hurt for Aaron and Malachi at some points and with my angst addiction issues, that's hard to do. I loved it!

I've adored everything I've ever read by Kade and Piper separately, so I had no doubts that I would love this book, but I wasn't expecting to completely fall in love with these characters the way I did! When you combine two authors who's characters always have amazing chemistry, you get boys who's chemistry is explosive! Great job on this one! I hope to see more collabs in the future between these two.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Summer Read 27 November 2014

Aaron is renovating his parents lake-house for the summer. He invites his college-aged son to work with him, thinking it could be a bonding experience. They'd visited there in the past and had fun, but lately, separated from the mother and with the son grown up, they haven't had much time together.

The son brings along his room-mate who, unlike the son, is working his way through college. The summer job in construction/renovation with free room to stay in, is very welcome, and Malachai has worked for his carpenter father, so he knows something about it.

Aaron had his son at a young age by accident. He always knew he was gay, but kept his sex life apart from his son. Malachai is out of the closet, but discrete. They both begin fighting an attraction, knowing things could get very messy...

So--father falls for son's friend and visa versa. That's the main story, although there are other conflicts due to Aaron's particular relationship to his son and the mother, and from being half in the closet due to his job as a construction company owner.

The relationship is sweet and thoughtful and very sexy. There are characters making things more difficult for each other by lack of communication, but let's face it, the main problem of trying not to get into the pants of your son's friend is tough no matter what!

I enjoyed this book. The characters were easy to relate to (except maybe the son, although he had his good points) and the situation wasn't as odd as it could be given the two main characters. Age difference wasn't extreme... it was just the relationships that had to be worked with.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, lazy day read 14 May 2014

I've enjoyed other works by these two authors as individuals and I was pleased with this collaboration. The tongue in cheek title is kind of fun too! The characters were well defined and the relationships of the three men working who are remodelling a family summer home for sale were realistically depicted. The main characters were likable and their growing attraction and budding relationship were well told. Overall, a fun little read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable beach read~ 26 June 2014

I'm normally not a huge fan of older men/younger men stories, but this one was really perfect in execution. I loved Aaron--his quiet determination sprinkled with a little self doubt. Malachi was simply hot. HOT. Though I am no expert in house remodeling, it didn't matter--this story played out exactly like my fantasy of the situation would. Just enough carpentry to make it feel real. I was more into the developing relationship.

I wasn't a fan of Julian--he was a bit bratty, and a lot more immature than Malachi. It was difficult for me to see how Malachi and Julian could be such good friends--they were so different in most every way, it seemed. Still, it didn't impact my enjoyment of the story.

If you are looking for a really sweet romance, this is a perfect pick!
