Alfhild has just lost her mother whom she has been estranged from for years and now it’s too late for a proper goodbye. Or is it? The fact is that her mother was a witch! Her father was a strong wizard but disappeared when she was only twelve. With those parents it is no surprise to learn that Alf is also a witch, a powerful one if she wants to be, but she decided that she didn’t want to be one when she lost her father. Instead she went into the hospitality industry and learnt all she could. That caused the rift with her mother. But now she has discovered that she is a landowner! In fact she owns a whole village and a very old, abandoned, inn. When she sees it she fall in love with it and decides to move in and renovate it. But then she walks into the back garden and finds a dead body. She immediately calls the police who cordon that area off. This is the start of Alfhild realising that she has never really lost touch with her witch side and she decides to embrace it. The village has people who welcome her and those who want to force her out but she cannot tell who is who.
This is good story that has you cheering for Alf and wanting to shake her at times. But, as she said, all the mistakes she made were meant to be for, when combined with her witchy talents, she was the perfect person to bring the inn back to life. I must say that I envied her! LOL! A great book for all ages.

An excellent witchy tale as Alfhild wants to be normal human , not a witch, but inherits her fathers inn and renovates it while fighting evil. A well written and delightful witchy story that I enjoyed reading very much.

I enjoyed this book. It was full of surprises as expected with a witchy cosy mystery.
I enjoyed getting to know Alf as she was getting to know herself and her witch heritage.
Will be reading the next book in the series.

Inn-heritence troubles.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 April 2020Verified Purchase
When Alfhild arrives in the sleepy village of Whittlecombe to take possession of her inheritence - an ancient hostelry that had belonged to her mother - her reception was decidedly mixed.
Only the owner of the village shop and a handsome young man, who appeared to be the local handyman, seemed at all friendly.
The property was an inn that had definitely seen better days and would require a great deal of work to even make it habitable again, but the discovery of a dead body in the backyard set in train a series of unwelcome events.
Will Alf(hild) overcome her secret enemies; will romance blossom and will she rediscover her magical powers?

A fun read

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I completely change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring down a lot)
First time read the author's work?: Yes
Will you be reading more?: Yes
----
Pros:
Nice world building and set up of the magical world 'within' our world.
Enjoyable and fun mystery.
Fun leading lady.
Nice characters and dialogue.
-
Personal likes: I like paranormal and I like cozy mysteries, so this book was a nice blend.
--
Cons:
Ongoing plotline and I've not got the next book.

A Great Read

I enjoyed this book🙂
It's well crafted and the story keeps you wanting to read "just another chapter" . I read most of it in me go reading the last 15% a couple of days later. The author has built another, witching world living hidden in parallel to our normal one. The witching street hidden in London does seem to be borrowed from Diagon Alley though - but why not borrow a little from another magical world we already know and love?
I wasn't expecting the surprise revelation towards the end which was good🙂 thank you to the author for a great read👍

Hugely enjoyable

There's lots of fun in the Wonkiest Witch and lots of occult happens too. What I like best about Jeannie Wycherley's books is that dark or light all the magic(k) is believable.
Her characters are always brilliantly drawn too and in Alf there is a wonky witch we can warm to and watch grow. Can't wait for the next book.
