This is the story of Peyton Prescott, the worst BFF ever, who stole Claire's boyfriend Todd, and Todd took off when Peyton was diagnosed with breast cancer. During her battle, her brother Logan convinced her to bare her soul in a memoir framed by his photographs of her journey.
She embarks on a European tour to promote the book, headed by Mitch Mathis, who has just started his book PR business. Mitch battles his demons, losing his father to cancer in his early teen years and stepping up to help his mother and much younger sister, and being victimized by a workplace romance that turned sour.
Despite their mutual attraction, both Peyton and Mitch battle their demons as well as the demons of the other. A confrontation with Todd finally brings Peyton a clear understanding of her betrayal of Claire, and this understanding shatters Peyton. Surprisingly, Claire plays a pivotal role in defending Peyton and finally bringing Peyton and Mitch together.
Ms. Beck has a way of bringing her characters to life, and creates sharp, realistic dialogue that ranges from humorous, to emotionally charged, to loving. Mitch changes along the way, becoming more forceful in dealing with his mother and sister, and learning to absorb some of Peyton's view about enjoying life. Ms. Beck managed to change my view of Peyton from an entitled, self-absorbed woman to a sympathetic, empathetic character. Bravo!
Gird your hearts, readers, because this story will put it through the paces with multiple tugs and a vast sea of emotions. Fiction or not, a character's journey through a battle against this type of cancer resonates strongly with all of us. (Sorry for not saying the B word, but I’m sure the Zon bots will hit on it and I really want you to be able to read my review. This book is phenomenal and you absolutely need it in your life.) It’s not just a story of courage and strength, but an inspiring, uplifting story of growth, renewal, triumph and healing.
The characters are complex and beautifully flawed, making them endearing, relatable and beloved to the reader. They'll easily find themselves a place in your heart and their story will ensure that you experience everything alongside them. This is one of those books that leaves an indelible mark and will stay with you long after the last page. Get your copy of this emotional, uplifting, phenomenal read today. You won’t regret it!
*I read an early edition of this book freely and voluntarily, having made no commitment to provide feedback and receiving no compensation of any kind from any source.
The author does not sugarcoat the depth of Peyton's trials, tribulations, successes and failures. Ms Beck presents an honest, authentic, caring, easy to connect with portrait of what it could be like for others who are on the same journey as Peyton. Being a cancer survivor, too, I appreciated the author's approach.
Throughout the story, the readers will encounter a few surprises which increase the intensity of the plot and one book lovers will find intriguing. These surprises are one of the aspects of Jamie Beck's writing I sincerely prize!
If I were able to award an unlimited star rating to THE WONDER OF NOW, I would! Its worthiness is proven from the opening chapter through the epilogue. Ms Beck deserves a resounding ovation for this masterpiece!
Peyton Parrish has had to face cancer and how it has affected her and her family and friends. Her boyfriend broke up with her and her parents distanced themselves as usual. Only her brother, Logan, has stood beside her and held her up. His work with photography led to his taking photographs of her throughout her ordeal and her writing about what has happened to her and how she is feeling. Now the book has been published and it is time for a book tour. Since Logan is just getting engaged with Claire, Peyton is on the European stage of the book tour by herself with their publicist for company. Can Peyton’s playful personality compete with the forceful personality of their publicist? It is very important for his company that this tour work. What can Peyton and her brother do to get the tour to work?
