Award-winning author Carrie Stuart Parks combines her expertise as a forensic artist with her talent for crafting a gripping story in this pause-resisting web of light and shadow.
A woman off the grid.
Darby Graham thinks she’s on a much-needed vacation in remote Idaho to relax. But before she even arrives at the ranch, an earthquake strikes. Then a barn on the edge of town is engulfed in flames and strange problems at the ranch begin to escalate, and Darby finds herself immersed in a chilling mystery.
A town on fire.
More fires erupt around town, and a serial arsonist sends taunting letters to the press after each. As a forensic linguist, this is Darby’s area of expertise . . . but the scars her work has caused her are also the reason she’s trying to escape her life.
A growing darkness.
As the shadows continue moving in, pieces of the town around her come into sharper focus. To make it out alive, Darby must decide if she can trust the one man who sees her clearly.
Praise for Woman in Shadow:

Darby Graham is another of Parks' wonderful creations. She's a forensic linguist grappling with the effects of PTSD as a result of a crime case gone wrong a few years back. She also lost a leg in that incident and I appreciated how Parks shows no fear in including this in her lead together with her prosthetic limb. Darby is smart, intuitive, tremendously brave for someone who has lost so much and is struggling with PTSD and Parks gives her so much vulnerability that one can't not be rooting for her.
The suspense pretty much starts immediately and doesn't let up so I was turning pages continuously. There were moments when it became a bit of a blur especially near the end and the bad guys were a surprise to me when they were revealed. Darby's forensic skills coming to the fore.
And the 2 dogs: Holly and Maverick whom Darby adopts after saving them from being putdown. They steal the show frankly and how Parks (a huge dog lover) presents them together with Darby's intuitive connection with them both made this novel a delight to read.
I do hope we might see Darby Graham once again.
I received an early ebook copy of the novel from Thomas Nelson via NetGalley as part of their First Editions reading program with no expectation of a positive review.

Darcy Graham is completing her final task for Clan Firinn, a rehabilitation center for first responders. She has PTSD with some accompanying triggers. Her counselor wants her to look around and see if she can find the source of some odd events happening at the ranch, then report back. She has been trained as a forensic linguistic, one who can read between the lines the written or spoken words to what is really being said or not said. She saves a couple of dogs, who were abandoned and due to be killed, before leaving Targhee for Mule Shoe Ranch. She notices the handsome detective but knows there is no way he would be interested in her, plus she has a job to do and no time for romance. Upon arrival at the ranch, she is almost immediately a victim of a bear attack and things quickly escalate. Who is behind these attacks and why have they suddenly risen to the level of murder?
Fantastic! I read this book from start to finish in one sitting; it was that riveting. I loved Darby’s character and her unique job as a forensic linguist. I didn’t know that kind of job existed. Her struggles with PTSD and guilt from the past were made real with descriptive language. The dogs were a great addition, giving comfort and aid to a hurting woman. I thought the plot was unique, the suspense heart-pounding, and the two main characters’ struggles with their pasts and the resolutions interesting. Carrie Stuart Parks is one of my “must read” authors. She always delivers a story with characters of depth that draw readers into their world. I can’t wait for what she writes next!

It seemed like anything and everything that could go wrong at the Ranch did go wrong. Were all the various 'mishaps' strokes of bad luck, or were they deliberate acts of sabotage? And if so, why? I was so invested in finding out what was really going on. I was surprised quite a few times. And I could not figure out who the guilty party was. I was pretty much suspicious of everybody, but could never actually nail down the culprit. I love it when I can be kept guessing like that.
The Ranch is close to the Yellowstone caldera, so that added an interesting element to the story. As did Darby's profession as a forensic linguist. I didn't know anything about that job beforehand, so it was fascinating reading about what all that entailed.
I highly recommend this book to suspense and mystery fans. It was so good! I'm definitely eager to read more from this author.

Darby’s PTSD hindered her ability to see her strengths. Skills learned in therapy were critical in the plot. Plot twists and red herrings left the reader questioning: Who? What? Why? I too thought I was in the midst of an Agatha Christy book at the mis-directions and demise of characters.
Did not get more insight into Darby until about 1/3 through book. It gave more facts on her background and her PTSD. Would have thought her forensic linguist skill would have been more prominent. (Too) many characters, unexplained accidents, Shadow Woman, arsons, isolation all combined to lead the reader in many directions - leaving a disjointed feeling. Open questions/items were quickly tied up at the end.
Yes, I would recommend.
