Really great historical romance read. A cut above so many other mediocre books in this genre. Ms Carlyle's earlier books (such as this one) are mostly terrific. (Sadly IMO her more recent books seemed to be written in more of a rush - perhaps to meet publishers' demands? Who knows.... The quality of her writing seems to have deteriorated, anyway.)
This book is entertaining, clever, and has a strong plot with interesting well-developed characters. The secondary characters are also well-drawn. The historical setting is well-researched and avoids many of the cliches of this genre. There is a nice level of romance and heat, without going overboard and becoming tasteless. There is also a bit of suspense thrown in, although it's primarily a romance.
You may prefer to read the companion novel first: A Woman Scorned, as this book (A Woman of Virtue) contains spoilers for A Woman Scorned. However A Woman of Virtue can easily be read as a standalone. BTW A Woman Scorned is also an excellent read.
I have reread this book several times and enjoyed it each time. It's a quality piece work. I will continue to reread Ms Carlyle's earlier books, but so far I haven't found one of her more recent ones that I could be bothered finishing.
